Mother’s Day’s Fascinating History

Did you know the American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914? That’s right. On Sunday, we will be celebrating 100 years from the time founder Anna Jarvis coneived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children.

Be sure to watch the History Channel’s fascinating 3-minute vignette about the history of Mother’s Day. Think it was all carnations and roses? Think again. By 1920, Anna had become so disgusted with Mother’s Day that denounced the holiday and even was arrested protesting it. Take a few minutes to watch the fascinating story.
