Most of us are familiar with The Children’s Hospital of Denver’s top-notch medical services.
On Thursday, Mile High Mamas met at the hospital to learn about how moms like you can significantly impact the landscape of Colorado’s public policies. We also dined on Qdoba Mexican Grill’s new Mini Street Tacos.
Nothing like changing the world one Mama’s Night Out at a time.
Advocacy Program
Have you ever gone to bat for your child when there was a problem at school? If so, you already know about being an advocate. The hospital’s advocacy efforts rely on the strength and action of The Children’s Hospital Grassroots Advocacy Network. They are looking for people like you who care about kids’ well-being and want to make a difference.
Over four thousand people currently participate in the Network, which joins the voices of physicians, healthcare professionals, patients and families with business leaders and community members to speak up clearly and powerfully for kids when public policy decisions are made. The great thing about this network is you can be as active as you would like by sharing information or just being on their mailing list so you can stay informed about what issues may impact your kids at the legislative session. Go to thechildrenshospital.org/give/advocacy for additional information and to sign up for this very important program.
Sports Nutrition and Concussion Care for Young Athletes: A Parent and Coaches Seminar
Concussions are a serious problem for active kids. Join The Children’s Hospital on Sunday, April 17 from 2-3 p.m. at The Wildlife Experience for an educational seminar for parents and coaches about important sports medicine topics, specifically concussion, nutrition and sleep habits. The Children’s Hospital Government affairs team will also provide an update on SB-40, the Jake Snakenberg Youth Concussion Act (the proposed bill requires that coaches of all youth athletic activities be educated annually in concussion recognition) and what it means for you. Go here to register.
Children’s Hospital Resources
Few people know about the hospital’s extensive Web site. It goes beyond finding doctors and provides relevant, timely information for moms such as How to Talk to Kids About Japan’s Earthquake & Tsunami and the New National Car Seat Guidelines. The hospital’s FREE ChildrensMD iPhone App provides symptom relief for minor illnesses or injuries you can manage on your own. It’s like a doctor, just a click away.
Qdoba Mexican Grill’s Spoils
One of the bonuses of having a national restaurant like Qdoba Mexican Grill based in Denver is we were privy to the culinary team’s fantastical creations. Chef Ted personally prepared their newest entree: Mini Street Tacos. Made with three small corn tortillas filled with slow-roasted pulled pork of seasoned shredded beef, they are topped with a tangy red onion and fresh cilantro relish. If your tongue can handle it (mine couldn’t), the order comes with a side of delicious yet spicy Ancho Chile BBQ beans. The dish is just $4.99 and is only in stores until May 8, 2011.
Chef Mike gave us a cooking demonstration for mango salsa and educated us on the nutritional value of the restaurant’s children’s menu (Naked Burrito, Cheese or ‘Lil Chicken Quesadilla, single taco, and the Lil’ Chicken Naked Burrito). I queried him about the possibility of also offering wheat tortillas and he assured me they are currently in development.
When they launch, I’ll take full credit for that one. 🙂
