One of the many great things to come out of Disney+ is the many reimagined classics we’ve all grown to love.  Now, Disney’s live-action reimagining of “Pinocchio” is headed our way this fall, and we finally have a glimpse of what’s to come from the magical tale. On May 31, Disney debuted the first teaser for the forthcoming film (not to be confused with Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion adaptation set to hit the streamer in December) with Tom Hanks completely transformed into the infamous Pinocchio woodcarver Geppetto. The short clip showcases many of our iconic favorites including “Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight” from the original 1940 movie (yes, it’s that old!) The trailer also tea...

New Pixar movie set in the Italian Riviera coming in 2021

Walt Disney Studios has unveiled details about its next original Pixar film called “Luca.” Not too much has been revealed yet, but Disney said Thursday that the animated movie will “introduce a boy named Luca as he experiences an unforgettable summer in a seaside town on the Italian Riviera.” Luca, to be released on June 18, 2021, will be directed by Enrico Casarosa. “This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in Luca,” Casarosa said in a statement.  “So in addition to the beauty and charm of t...

Movie Review: Fairy Tales Come True in Pixar’s Onward

Unicorns are dirty pests that get into trash. Elves live in suburban homes with toasters and TVs. Cops are minotaurs and cyclops. A Manticore runs a family restaurant. Pixies rob convenience stores. Magic? It is nowhere to be found.  Onward opens in a realm that has forgotten its wild and magical roots. Technology, invention, and even pure laziness have replaced the wonder of adventuring through challenges. A few haven’t forgotten the old ways, however. Exuberantly nerdy Barley Lightfoot (Chris Pratt) is using his gap year to careen around in a custom van named Guinevere. He is obsessed with a role-playing game akin to Dungeons and Dragons, convinced it is more than a fun hobby. It is real. When his shy, socially awkward younger brother, Ian (Tom Holland) turns 16, their mom Laurel (J...

Pixar’s New Short Film Is About A Nonverbal Girl With Autism

A new Pixar short film is coming to streaming platform Disney+ on January 10, 2020. Unlike the production house’s previous films, this one breaks quite a few barriers. Called Loop, the animated short film will feature a non-verbal girl of color with autism as one of the main characters. For many viewers on the autism spectrum, this is a major breakthrough; think about the last few animated shorts you’ve seen, how representative have they been? Did they have an inclusive or diverse cast? While they may have had some women as leads or some characters of color, it is highly unlikely that learning disabilities were centered. it looks like things are finally, finally changing. “Loop” was directed by Pixar filmmaker Erica Milsom, who has featured people with disabilities in some...

Movie Review: It’s a Beautiful Day in the Movie Theater

The most striking thing about It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is how it seamlessly bridges childlike wonder with gritty adult realities, all guided by an extraordinary man, Mr. Fred Rogers. Yet he isn’t the main character in this new film. Rather, the focus of the story is a world-weary, bitter, troubled magazine writer named Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys). It’s based on a true story and magazine article called “Can You Say…Hero?” by Tom Junod. Vogel is assigned to write a short blurb on Mr. Rogers for Esquire magazine’s “Heroes” edition. It was to be a simple, straightforward assignment. However, while Mr. Rogers (Tom Hanks) appears to be a simple, soft-spoken man, he is gifted with mighty powers of observation and a heart for hurting people, big and small. Mr. Rogers knows tha...
