What do you get when you mix a 17-year-old girl who lives with friends, has no boundaries and no desire to obey the rules that governed most people? You get Me. Everybody thought I was too young, no one said it but one could read it in their gaze when they saw my swollen belly. […]
When I was a child, I was imaginative, inventive, and enterprising. I loved to write stories, sing songs, recite poetry, and direct elaborate theatrical productions with my brother and cousins. As an adult, I look back on my creative childhood escapades with great fondness, yet now that I am a parent, I am aware of […]
July 18, 2007. That was the day that defined me most as a mother. Because that was the day I became both a mom…and a dad. Of course, as a mom, the days that each of my children was born were three of the happiest memories I have. But that day in July was the […]

Motherhood ambushed me. Some women see it coming for miles, like a plodding camel on a desert horizon. Others hail it like a cab, smartly whistling and waving it to stop, ready for the ride. My experience was more ambush. It wasn’t violent, traumatic, or unwelcome. It was like when your dog greets you at […]
In 2001 I started dating the handsome man that would eventually become my husband. We wanted to start a family (neither of us had kiddos yet) but were in our late thirties. Of course, I had a plan. I gave us a year to get pregnant the old-fashioned way. If that didn’t happen we would […]
I love my Mom’s quiet strength. I remember vividly the day I found out we were infertile. She did not probe, suggest, plan, solve, push, advise. She sat on the grass with me that summer day and listened.
