Blue Mountain Youth Ranch: This Colorado camp attracts campers from around the world

The Allen Family of Blue Mountain Ranch is doing now what they’ve done for the last 75 years – preparing for another fun-filled summer at their exceptional camp located just west of Pikes Peak.  An anomaly in today’s world, BMR remains a small, private coeducational summer camp attracting some of the finest families in America and throughout the world.  Though some aspects of camp life remain much as they were years ago, exciting innovations have brought the program into the future.  A re-worked ropes course, technical climbing, a gymnasium, and special events each summer combine with horseback riding and hiking in the Pike National Forest, swimming, and sports to make this one of the most comprehensive programs in camping.  Coach Bill Allen and his wife Dorothy wanted ...

Sleepaway Camps Provide a Place for Kids to Heal and Thrive in Nature After a Year of Isolation

Our kids have been through a lot over the past year. The COVID-19 pandemic has stolen so much from our children and up-ended the foundations of their lives. It’s been nearly a year of “missing.” Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, this has increased the rates of youth depression, anxiety and sadness. This summer, parents are prioritizing mental health alongside physical health for their kids and summer camp could be the key. Bob Ditter, a child and adolescent therapist, has worked with camps around the world to train staff and provide guidance on child development. Bob has some valuable insights about the impact of the pandemic on kids and how camps can help. “If the pandemic has reminded us of anything, it is that virtual connections, including social media, leave something vital out of ...

Blue Mountain Ranch: Mountain memories to last a lifetime

Keystone Science School’s Hot Pink Gorilla & Adventure Programs

What does Keystone Science School (KSS) and the Hot Pink Gorilla (HPG) have in common? Besides being from Keystone, Colorado there’s not too much in common except both inspire curiosity. It’s almost impossible for a child to see the Hot Pink Gorilla and not ask questions. What is that? Is it real? What does the HPG eat? Does the HPG hibernate? Is it male or female? Keystone Science School is a camp program based in Keystone, Colorado which hosts Day, Overnight, and Adventure-based programs. The program is for kids ages 5-17 years old and the mission of the school is to inspire curiosity and critical thinking. At first glance, KSS is a traditional summer camp with campfire sing-a-longs, backpacking excursions, mountain summits, whitewater rafting and archery, but when you look closer each a...

Summer Camp: Pedalheads Bike Camps

The thing about learning to ride a bike is that it’s about so much more than simply learning to ride a bike. It’s about confidence, freedom and independence. At Pedalheads Bike Camps, we understand that we’re not in the bike business, we’re in the childhood business, and we know that this rite of passage is something our campers will remember for a lifetime!   Pedalheads is a week-long bike safety and skills program for kids ages 3-10. Traffic and densely populated urban areas make it difficult for parents to teach their kids to ride bikes. At Pedalheads, we help give kids the confidence they need to ride safely on the road, in parks and around their neighborhoods! Our goal is to provide our little campers with a fun, educational program that will help them ditch their train...
