Is My Child Gifted? Interview With Dr Linda Silverman
As an education major, I was required to take only one class on learning disabilities and giftedness. 98% of the semester was spent studying learning disabilities and the other 2% spent on giftedness. I did not think much of it. Now, however, I’m very disappointed in this drastic imbalance. My husband is a gifted individual but did not know for sure until this year. Every teacher he ever had missed it. He is brilliant and I’ve always known it, but with an IQ of 130 there are unique blessings and challenges he faces daily.
Giftedness is genetic, so naturally when our son was 2 1/2 and teaching himself to read, I was a speechless. How was that possible? How could he be decoding these complex phonics concepts with little help? Soon afterwards we saw more and more signs of giftedness (understanding of complex engineering, etc). He is a very sensitive child and feels very passionately about most things. Without intellectual stimulation, he goes into meltdown mode. He is incredibly aware and emotionally sensitive and learns at an astounding rate. This presents its own joys and challenges.
5 Valentine’s Day Gifts Ideas for the Geek in Your Life
Valentine’s Day is sneaking up on us and is less than two weeks away. Rather than scrambling at the last minute, it’s nice to think ahead and be prepared to make those near and dear feel loved and appreciated. At our house, Valentine’s Day isn’t just a big deal for my husband and me but also a day we try to show lots of lots to our kids (read: lots of candy, cards and hugs). If you want to step outside the norm this year and get creative with your gifts, below are some unconventional ideas for the tech lovers in your life.
Avoiding “Data Loss Nightmares” While Avoiding Hassles
Computers always crash when it’s least convenient. It’s basically a law of nature. When you’re a parent, this law doubles because little fingers often find their way to our technology and innocently cause destruction. I have learned this the hard way. Too many times. I’ve lost photos we will never get back because I didn’t take the time to keep my backups up-to-date.
Backing up data is something I know I should do just about every week, but getting the ginormous back up drive, hooking if up to the computer and figuring out which files I’ve added to my computer and need backing up is a time-consuming task that almost never gets done. Good thing there are tools that make the process hassle-free and run in the background.
Local Company Makes Team and Group Management a Snap for Parents
With the new year upon us, we are all looking for new tools and ideas for a better organized life. With every passing month it seems like new events, projects, gatherings and groups get added onto the schedule. I know I certainly need all the help I can get when it comes to staying on top of events and gatherings (as well as my responsibilities for each – do I have snack responsibilities this week?).
Great Apps for New Year’s Resolutions
My heart is absolutely broken for the families of Sandy Hook Elementary School. The unspeakable horror that has taken place is something no parent ever wants to spend a second preparing for. May God be with them and give them incredible grace during this heartbreaking time.
As we look to Christmas, it’s hard to imagine preparing for the new year already. Getting a head start on those obligatory “New Year’s Resolutions” will not only help you be more prepared to actually follow through, but will make them more meaningful as you take your time setting goals you can achieve.
6 Must-Have Apps for Shopping and Spreading Holiday Cheer
It really is the most wonderful time of the year. My favorite. While I absolutely love this season, I could do without some of the stress it brings. Shopping, shipping, decorating, keeping the kids out of the Christmas lights and presents, baking, and everything else the season brings. Thankfully, there are a few apps that can help keep us organized and on budget. If I missed your favorite, please feel free to share it in the comments below!
6 Spooktacular Apps for Halloween
Millie’s Book of Tricks and Treats Volume 1 and 2 by Megapops LLC ($0.99) iOS Universal is an adorably interactive digibook for kids in the Halloween spirit. The adorable Millie the dog dresses up in lots of costumes and it’s up to your little one to scratch away the cobwebs to find out what she’s wearing at each trick-r-treat location. Help Millie knock on each door and wait with anticipation as each door turns out to be a trick or a treat! This is innocent, spooky fun appropriate even for the tots.
5 Amazingly Kid-friendly Smartphone and Tablet Cases
While most of us work to limit how often our kids use portable computers, sometimes the option to let our child sit quietly and play a fun educational game is a real sanity-saver during a busy day. Or, during the school year, letting the kids play a math game to supplement their current written work can simply make a difficult subject just a bit more fun and interactive.
The biggest hesitation most moms have when it comes to handing over their precious handheld devices is the fear of breakage. Thank goodness kid-friendly cases! Below are some of my favorite disaster-averting iDevice cases for kids.

Do you troll the app store at least once a week looking to add new ones to your collection or are you always looking for great apps that help your kids get excited about learning? I know I certainly do both on a regular basis. Then again, I do admit, I am an app-aholic.

Gadgets for Staying Productive and Entertained On-the-Go
Now that school is back in session for most of the kiddos, we also are getting back into our more productive season of the year. Whether you work from home, away from home or are a busy stay-at-home mom, we are always looking for ways to be more productive.
I typically work toward spending time every day listening to educational and inspirational audiobooks and podcasts – honestly, I can hardly stand doing housework without something keeping my mind off the mundane chores. I find keeping my brain occupied during daily monotonous duties has great value – I can better my business by devouring relevant audiobooks and podcasts and a better mom and wife by doing the same. Below are a few of my favorite gadgets that help me do this no matter where I am (indoors, outdoors, in the car, etc).
