Exciting News: Bluff Lake is Getting a Makeover!

Big changes are coming to Bluff Lake Nature Center! On Monday, March 17, construction began on a special project to make their nature space even better. But don’t worry—Bluff Lake will stay open during construction, and they’re adding new pedestrian-only entrances on the Northwest side (Havana Street) and Southwest side (Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard) to make it easy to explore.

Bluff Lake is a 123-acre nature refuge in Northeast Denver, where kids and families can discover prairies, wetlands, and tons of wildlife—right in the city. Since 2019, more and more people have come to enjoy Bluff Lake, and now, over 100,000 visitors explore it every year.

What’s New?
They’re building a brand-new, eco-friendly nature center with:
🌱 A welcoming community space for learning and gathering
🏕️ Multi-use classrooms for camps and school programs
🏡 A headquarters for their team
♿ An accessible ramp trail so everyone can enjoy the lake!

Right now, Bluff Lake doesn’t have utilities or many buildings, and their staff works from an office miles away. These new improvements will help them take better care of the land, welcome even more visitors, and create safer, more awesome nature programs for kids—like summer camps, nature preschool, and field trips!

Kicking Off the Fun!
Their very own “Bluff Lake Explorers”—kids from their Outdoor Explorers Homeschool Program and Forest Preschool—had the honor of digging the first shovels of dirt to start this amazing project. They helped break ground and launch an exciting future for our wild and wonderful nature space!

Why It Matters
“To keep Bluff Lake healthy and welcoming for all, we need to take big steps to protect and improve it,” says Rachel Hutchens, our executive director. “This project makes nature more accessible to everyone in our community.”

“We hope this new space will inspire people of all ages to fall in love with nature!” adds Stacy Passmore, co-founder of Superbloom, the design team behind the project.

Bluff Lake just celebrated 30 years of connecting people with nature, and we’re thrilled to take this next step. A huge thank you to all the kids, families, volunteers, and supporters who make Bluff Lake such a special place!

Stay tuned for updates—and in the meantime, come explore and see the changes in action!
