Celebrate Black History Month–from a teen block party to open mic!

This February, Denver offers a variety of family-friendly events to celebrate Black History Month in 2025. The Denver Public Library has a particularly robust lineup that we’ll include below! 

Black History Live!
Experience living-history portrayals of Harriet Tubman by scholar/actor Becky Stone. The performance includes a 40-minute monologue followed by a 20-minute Q&A session. This event is free and suitable for all ages. Photo: Visit Denver

The Museum for Black Girls
Winner of the Mayor’s Excellence in Innovation Award in 2024, this intimate—and fun—experiential museum on the city’s 16th Street Mall celebrates and shares the contributions of Black women throughout history and currently in ways both sincere and playful. Head for the second floor at the Pavilions for a mix of original artworks, curated exhibitions about heritage, and virtual and actual interactive displays.  Open Wednesday–Sunday. 

Kusogea Nobi Drum Ensemble
Join the Kusogea Nobi Drum Ensemble at Arapahoe Libraries for an engaging performance that introduces children to African drumming and culture. This event is scheduled for February 24, 2025, from 2:30 to 3:30 PM

The Black American West Museum & Heritage Center (former home of Denver’s first African American female physician, Justina Ford) celebrates Black history year-round! The museum is open for limited, scheduled slots.

Denver Public Library Black History Month Events

join Denver Public Library in honoring the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black communities with a wide variety of programs and events. From Genealogy Drop-In Help to interactive presentations like Harriet Tubman in Black History Live and a Teen Block Party, we have something for everyone. Feed your imagination at our Afrofuturism workshop, or discover Black voices and stories at our Black History Month Book Buzz and Vinyl Vibes poetry listening session. Explore Denver’s Black heritage with events like Dearfield: Founding a Black Colorado Town and Black Americans in the West, or engage in meaningful conversations at our Community Circle

Lastly, don’t forget to return your Winter of Reading (WOR) game board at any location by Feb. 28 for a limited edition mug or tote bag celebrating ten years of WOR. Mindfulness Hour

Wednesday, Feb. 5, 4-5pm, Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library

An hour to rest and engage in mindfulness through meditation and light movement rooted in racial trauma healing. All levels are welcome. Mats, chairs, and tea provided. Ideal for ages 13+.

Vinyl Vibes: Poets

Saturday, Feb. 8, 2-4 p.m., Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library

Join us for a special listening session celebrating the late Nikki Giovanni and other Black poets reading their own works on vinyl recordings, or bring some of your own vinyl to share!

Afrofuturism

Saturday, Feb. 8, 2-3:30 p.m., Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library

Learn about Afrofuturism—futuristic or science fiction themes that incorporate Black history and culture—as we look at recent examples of pop culture and create our own art project. Ideal for ages 5-12.

Black History Month Book Buzz

Saturday, Feb. 8, 12-1 p.m., Virginia Village

We’ll explore books about various aspects of the Black experience, both historically and today. Ideal for ages 13+.

Black LGBTQ+ History in Denver

Tuesday, Feb. 11, 6-7:30 p.m., Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library

Join us to celebrate Black History Month with a conversation about Black LGBTQ+ history in Denver and current efforts to support this community with Black Pride Colorado!

Genealogy Drop-In Help

Do you need help getting started with your family history research? Have questions about the library’s genealogy databases and collections? Drop in for help using DPL tools to explore your family history or genealogy questions!

Teen Open Mic

Celebrate Black History Month with an open mic shoutout to Black creators of all types, current and past. Light refreshments provided. Ideal for ages 13-19.

Black People Know Things Trivia

Saturday, Feb. 15, 2-4 p.m., Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library

Join us for a robust in person community event for Black people in Denver and elsewhere. Ideal for ages 18+.

Community Circle

Tuesday, Feb. 18, 6-7pm, Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library

A discussion-led event centering the themes of Elevation and Education. Join us for a facilitated conversation on personal growth, community activism and collective responsibility in a welcoming and respectful space. Snacks and refreshments provided. Capacity at 20 attendees. Space opens 30 minutes early to settle in.

Dearfield: Founding a Black Colorado Town

Wednesday, Feb. 19, 4-5 p.m., Ross-Cherry Creek

Come enjoy a multimedia presentation in honor of Black History month and learn about Dearfield, the largest and most successful African American town in Colorado history, founded in 1910.  Ideal for ages 15+.

Teen Block Party

Friday, Feb. 21, 3-5 p.m., Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library

Join us for a block party celebrating Black hHeritage in Denver with music, food, vendors, and a Black heritage gallery walk. Ideal for ages 13-18.

Black History Month Art Exhibition Reception

Saturday, Feb. 22, 2-4 p.m., Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library

Join us for a reception honoring the Colorado artists featured in our Black History Month Art Exhibition, on display February-April,  2025!

Black Americans in the West

Learn more about Denver’s Black American West Museum,  which highlights local stories and history spanning from the 1850s to the present day. Ideal for ages 13+.

Skylark Reels: Abar

Join us for a Kanopy screening of the recently restored blaxploitation superhero movie, Abar: Black Superman (1977). Ideal for ages 21+.

Black History Live

Thursday, Feb. 27, 10:30-11:30 a.m., Decker

Black History comes to life in this presentation as acclaimed scholars/actors portray significant historical figures like Louis Armstrong and speak about their lives and answer questions in character. All ages are welcome. No registration is required. Limited accessible parking near the south entrance.
