15 fun family New Year’s resolutions to keep you laughing and connected

Do you want to feel more connected to your family? Here are some fun and light-hearted family New Year’s resolutions for 2025 that will get everyone involved and laughing. Pick-and-choose your favorites!

1. Family “No Screen Sundays”

Resolution: No phones, tablets, or TV on Sundays (except for emergencies, of course). Instead, we’ll spend the day doing something more interactive—like playing board games, going for walks, having a pillow fight or having a family talent show where Dad sings his version of “Let It Go” for the 47th time.

2. Family Clean-Up Challenge

Resolution: Once a month, we’ll have a “family cleaning competition” where everyone gets a room (or a section) to clean in 20 minutes. The catch? You have to do it while racing to music, or perhaps while wearing hilarious costumes. Bonus points for the person who makes the most noise while cleaning.

3. The “No Complaints” Jar

Resolution: Every time someone complains, they have to drop a quarter (or any small change) into a jar. At the end of the month, we’ll use the money for a fun family activity—like a pizza night, a trip to a trampoline park, or an ice cream outing. Time to bring on the gratitude… and a little less whining!

4. More Family Dinners Together

Resolution: We resolve to have at least three family dinners a week where we actually sit down, eat together, and talk about something other than who’s borrowing whose stuff or who’s leaving dirty socks around the house. (Or, if you’re lucky, we might just talk about something interesting, like aliens or the possibility of teleportation.)

5. Family Dance Party Fridays

Resolution: Every Friday night, we’ll crank up the music and have a 15-minute “dance-off.” The catch? We all have to participate, and no one is allowed to take themselves too seriously. Prepare for spontaneous dance moves, silly outfits, and a lot of laughter. You might even learn some new TikTok moves from the kids!

6. The “Gratitude Tree”

Resolution: Each member of the family will write one thing they’re grateful for each day, and we’ll add it to our “Gratitude Tree” (a simple homemade tree with branches). At the end of the month, we’ll read all the notes together and realize we have a lot to be thankful for (even if that includes no more broccoli for dinner).

7. Monthly Family Bucket List Adventures

Resolution: Once a month, we’ll check one big (or small) activity off our family bucket list. Whether it’s a trip to a local museum, a hike in the mountains, or baking a ridiculous cake together, we’ll make time for a fun, shared adventure. Bonus: Taking pictures of our adventures will become a yearly family tradition!

8. Random Acts of Kindness Challenge

Resolution: Each family member will perform at least one random act of kindness every month. It could be helping a neighbor with groceries, donating old clothes, or making a surprise lunch for someone. At the end of the year, we’ll see how much good we’ve spread around—and how much karma has come our way!

9. “No Yelling” Month

Resolution: We’ll go one month where the rule is: No yelling. (Well, okay, maybe slightly loud voices in an emergency situation like when someone leaves the door wide open in winter.) Instead, we’ll work on communicating in calm, peaceful tones—even if it’s to remind someone for the tenth time to pick up their shoes.

10. New Family Traditions Week

Resolution: This year, we’re going to try one new family tradition and commit to it for the year. Whether it’s a weekly movie night, a special way to celebrate birthdays, or a quirky holiday we create, this new tradition will bring the family together for fun, memories, and a good dose of joy.

11. Family Time Capsule

Resolution: This year, we’ll create a family time capsule filled with mementos of 2025—photos, favorite snacks, current memes, predictions for the future, and anything else that screams “this is us.” At the end of the year, we’ll open it up and laugh at our ridiculousness (and how much we’ve probably changed).

12. 30-Minute Family Creative Time

Resolution: Once a week, we’ll all spend 30 minutes doing something creative together—whether it’s drawing, painting, crafting, building Legos, or writing a story. The catch? We have to use our imaginations—and not just create a new version of what we already have at home (no more recreating Minecraft worlds in real life, okay?).

13. Eat More Veggies (But Make It Fun)

Resolution: We will eat more veggies, but with a fun twist! Each week, a different family member picks a new vegetable to try. The rest of us must try it, too! To make it more entertaining, we’ll give it a silly name. Example: “Dinosaur Leaves” (aka spinach) or “Space Carrots” (aka carrots with a sprinkle of seasoning).

14. No More “Maybe Later” on Family Chores

Resolution: This year, we’re going to tackle chores with urgency—no more saying, “I’ll do it later!” Family chores will be scheduled, and we’ll complete them together. We may even make a competition out of it—who can fold the towels the fastest or clean up the backyard in record time? Points for enthusiasm.

15. Family Joke Jar

Resolution: Whenever someone tells a joke (or a bad pun), we’ll put it in the “Family Joke Jar.” At the end of the month, we’ll pull out our favorites and rate them. The winner gets bragging rights and possibly an ice cream sundae. Because who doesn’t love a good (or bad) joke?

These resolutions are all about making 2025 a year of fun, connection, and creating hilarious memories together. Plus, they’ll help you embrace the chaos that comes with being a family, and turn it into something truly special! Happy New Year, Mile High Mamas! 🎉
