Motherhood: How to be grateful even when you’re struggling

Motherhood: How to be grateful even when you’re struggling

Finding gratitude in challenging times as a mom can feel like an uphill climb, but even small shifts in perspective can make a world of difference. Here are a few ideas to help nurture gratitude, even when you’re struggling:

  1. Embrace the Little Moments: When everything feels overwhelming, try to notice small things—a shared laugh with your child, a hug, or a quiet moment to yourself. These tiny moments can feel like small victories and bring warmth to hard days.
  2. Start a Gratitude Journal: Set aside a few minutes each day to write down one or two things you’re thankful for. It could be as simple as “We all made it through the day” or “I had a moment of peace this morning.” Over time, you might find that even the smallest things help to shift your mindset.
  3. Focus on the “Why”: When things get difficult, it can help to pause and reflect on why you’re doing what you’re doing. Being a mom is incredibly hard, but focusing on the love and the long-term impact you’re making can help keep gratitude alive.
  4. Accept Help and Self-Compassion: It’s okay to acknowledge that things are tough. Being grateful doesn’t mean you have to pretend things are fine. Allow yourself to accept help or take a break without guilt—self-compassion is key to sustaining gratitude.
  5. Create a Family Gratitude Practice: Involve your kids in finding things to be grateful for, even if it’s just once a week. Kids have such a unique way of looking at the world, and their insights can be a wonderful reminder of simple joys.

Finding gratitude during hard times is a practice, and it’s okay if it doesn’t feel natural immediately. Even the effort to try can be a meaningful step.
