¡Viva! Streets: It’s a celebration of summer and Sundays and it’s coming to Denver.
Denver’s first-ever large-scale Ciclovía (a Columbian cycling tradition) will extend over four Sundays May through August beginning on Sunday, May 14, 3.5 miles of downtown streets spanning from Welton Street located in Five Points, all the way down to the intersection of South Broadway and Alameda will be closed to motorized vehicles and open to people and families of all ages.
Paying homage to Ciclovía’s Colombian roots, ¡Viva! Streets aim to promote a healthier Denver by encouraging people to walk, bike, roll, jog, scoot, or dance down the car-free streets and connect with others through exercise, entertainment, and food. ¡Viva! Streets will take place rain or shine on May 14, June 4, July 9 and August 6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with activations to include:
- Taste of Colorado, which will bring a number of vendors, musicians, food, local artisans, and creatives
- Free Mother’s Day flowers for the first 50 moms who stop by the information tents
- Roller skating rails and boxes
- Special zones with children’s activities, life-sized games of chess and more!
Initially introduced in Bogota, Colombia in 1974, similar events became increasingly popular in major urban centers across South and Latin America and have spread across the globe. Today, there are more than 400 cities in nearly 30 countries that put on similar events.
In conjunction with ¡Viva! Streets, the Partnership’s fan-favorite summer tradition, Taste of Colorado, will expand from its usual Labor Day Weekend slot to take place during three of the four Sundays of ¡Viva! Streets from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Civic Center Park. Consistent with previous years, Taste of Colorado will feature live music, food trucks, vendors, a beer garden, kid-friendly activities, and sponsor activations. Rather than confining the festivities to Labor Day Weekend, eventgoers will have four opportunities throughout the summer to enjoy the delicious food and drinks Taste of Colorado has to offer.
