It’s “easy like Sunday morning” at Junkyard Social Club in Boulder. Parents and kids sip coffee and cocoas in the cafe while a local musician strums a guitar and sings family favorites. Some parents are sitting solo, reading the newspaper or working on laptops, while kids bounce back and forth between the cafe and the outdoor “Junkyard,” where there is climbing, creating, digging and dancing. As the kids burn off energy in the Boulder sunshine, a Junkyard employee sits in a lifeguard chair, keeping watch, whistling at the ready.  It’s just another day at Junkyard Social Club.

Boulder’s Junkyard Social Club bills itself as an “adventure playground and rebel museum” – and the name fits. With an emphasis on science, art, community and connection for both kids and adults, Junkyard Social Club is open Tuesdays – Sundays for drop-in play and also offers summer camps, as well as nightly events for adults, like comedy clubs and story collectives. The Junkyard is a nonprofit with a mission to spark curiosity and promote independent thought through fun, messy and exciting activities rooted in science and art.

With a 13-foot metallic junkyard giraffe standing sentry, Junkyard Social Club’s outdoor playground is unlike anything you’ve seen. It’s 6,000 square feet of fenced outdoor space accessed via roll-up glass garage doors. There are old-fashioned claw foot bathtubs filled with implements to dig in the sand and create water features. Red and white metal shade umbrellas created from the hoods of VW bugs dot the landscape. Of course, an actual VW bug is also parked in the yard too! There’s an old school bus converted to have a fun clubhouse feel inside, where some kids are reading and others are engaged in dramatic play. There’s a performance stage and junkyard xylophone of sorts created from various-sized pipes and played with a sturdy flip-flop. Kids and parents are drawn to the Junkyard’s artistic vibe, with cool and colorful murals and upcycled art throughout.

Located on East Pearl, Junkyard Social also offers 3,500 square feet of indoor space, including cool reading nooks, an indoor play structure, a performance stage, a second-floor space used for creative classroom instruction and lego play and tables and desks throughout. The big attraction, of course, is the outdoor playground, where in the afternoon, parents might meet for a beer while watching the kids enjoy their own version of happy hour, free to roam, yell, wiggle and laugh.

Junkyard’s summer camps are a must-do for kids ages six and up. Campers will work together as a kid-led Junkyard tribe to create their own structures, projects, and junk art. Junkyard Social’s “Provocateurs of Play” will catalyze their imaginations as they’re challenged to solve problems, work together, and gain the confidence to design and test their own ideas. These camps sell out every summer so be sure to book your spots early. Also worth noting, you can book a single day or a full week – lots of options!

Junkyard Social Club is now open Tuesday – Sunday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Admission is $12 for kids ages 2 and older and a suggested donation of $5 for adults ages 18 and up. Monthly family memberships are available for $40/month and pay for themselves in two visits. Come run, jump, climb and get your wiggles out! More info: junkyardsocialclub.org.
