When someone asks me what my favorite dessert is, I almost always answer ‘fruit’ because honestly, I love a palisade peach, a Jonathan apple (only available in late Sept/early oct), a pear in the fall. But barring that – I will ALWAYS pick ice cream. Some days I love to try a new flavor and some days I return to my favorite (I’m talking about cake batter).
VanLeeuwan Ice Cream. A couple of years ago, I did a summer-long ice cream tour of some of Denver’s best local ice cream shops (my daughter thought Little Man was the winner while I liked the Inventing Room). Van Leeuwan is not local – but it should definitely be on your list of must-visit ice cream shops. They open their first Colorado location at Larimer Square on September 15 with $1 scoops from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. They are well known for their unique flavors (Kraft Mac & Cheese and Grey Poupon) but they also have normal ice cream flavors. The Colorado shop will have a special flavor too – the Crooked Stave, a raspberry blueberry sorbet made with the brewery’s sour ale and rose. Even those that are vegan and non-dairy friendly will find awesome flavors made with oat or cashew milk.
