The challenge with this rideshare for Colorado’s disabled kids

HopSkipDrive provided the solution when Jerene Petersen was struggling to find rides for foster youth who had been placed in homes far from their regular schools.

At the time, she was the deputy executive director for the Colorado Department of Human Services. She knew that getting students back to their home schools would increase their chances of graduating high school and building stable lives. It’s also required by federal law — but drivers were hard to find.

HopSkipDrive — a rideshare service similar to Uber or Lyft that specializes in transporting children — now contracts with more than a dozen Colorado school districts, as well as human services agencies, to provide rides for vulnerable children: homeless youth, those in foster care, and students with disabilities whose specialized education plans include transportation.

But as a rideshare company, HopSkipDrive hasn’t been regulated like other companies that also provide rides for at-risk students. Those companies have to follow Colorado Department of Education rules that ensure drivers have certain training and vehicles meet safety requirements. Instead, HopSkipDrive has been regulated like other rideshare companies by the state Public Utilities Commission.

New Affordable Connectivity Program Also Helps Eligible Comcast Customers Connect for Free!

The digital world has become a more significant part of our lives than ever before. Schooling from home, connecting with loved ones, communicating with our co-workers – the list is endless. Yet, for the families in our community without internet access, the inability to connect could make a difference in an income stream, access to critical educational resources, and more.

If you or someone in your community needs to get connected, Comcast is here to connect more qualifying families with FREE high-speed home Internet.

Comcast has spent more than a decade working to address digital inequities. Comcast wants everyone to have the skills, resources, and tools they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world, from connecting people to the internet to supporting young, diverse storytellers.

Today there are more pathways than ever for students, families, and individuals to get connected and learn digital skills at little or no cost to them. In fact, a recent White House announcement celebrates an important milestone in our country’s efforts to promote broadband adoption and help low-income families subscribe and stay connected to the internet.

Now qualifying households in Colorado can get FREE home broadband!

Comcast is participating in the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). The ACP provides eligible low-income households a credit up to $30 a month toward the cost of Internet service. Customers who qualify can apply ACP credits to any tier of Xfinity Internet, including Internet Essentials.

  • Comcast’s top-rated Xfinity Mobile service, which includes 5G, is now available to customers enrolled in ACP, giving them the ability to save money on their connectivity needs inside and out of the home.
  • Internet Essentials customers can use their $30/month ACP discount to pay for both Xfinity Internet and Xfinity Mobile service. For example, an Internet Essentials customer (paying $9.95/month) can add one line of Unlimited on Xfinity Mobile ($45/month) for $24.95/month after applying the ACP discount.

Comcast Free Internet

“Over the past few years, broadband access has become increasingly important,” said Leslie Oliver, Director of Media and External Communications, Comcast. “Pairing our Internet Essentials program and Xfinity Mobile with the ACP is a significant milestone for digital inclusivity. They are providing opportunities for more Coloradans to be connected online to what matters most to them.”

Why is this important?

The program helps connect thousands of people to the internet who haven’t had access to it at home, especially in communities that have historically faced more barriers to getting online. The Affordable Connectivity Program is an FCC benefit program that helps ensure households can afford the broadband they need for work, school, healthcare, and more.

Who can use this?

A household must meet at least one of the following criteria: qualifies for the federal Lifeline program (i.e., Medicaid, SNAP, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Federal Public Housing Assistance, Veterans and Survivors Pension Benefit, Tribal Programs for Residents for Qualifying Tribal Lands); receives benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision; has an income that is at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines; and, or received a federal Pell Grant in the current award year.

Where can I get it?

Eligible households that enroll in the program can receive $30/month toward their Internet and mobile service ($75/month on Tribal lands). New and existing Xfinity Internet or Internet Essentials customers can visit www.xfinity.com/acp or call 844-389-4681 for more information, to determine eligibility, and sign up.

Please share information about Internet Essentials and the Affordable Connectivity Program with your community.

Explore Fisher’s Peak State Park and the new app that will help

Folks will soon be able to visit heritage sites in southeastern Colorado from the comfort of their homes. Using an app called Explore from the company Factor Earth, visitors will go on virtual adventures into sites that feature the significant heritage of the region. That includes Fisher’s Peak State Park, the Ludlow and Sand Creek Massacre sites, and portions of the Santa Fe Trail among others.

Funds for the project come from a grant from the state tourism office, given to the group Canyons & Plains of southeast Colorado. The organization works to preserve and promote culture and natural resources in the region. The app will include 360-degree views and lesson plans for teachers.

The content will be available on the Factor Earth app in about six months. Adventures through Bent’s Old Fort and the Boggsville Historic site are already available on the app.-CPRFishers Peak State Park

A short and easy Discovery Trail, which meanders to a small meadow perfect for picnics. A small loop around the meadow is lined with interpretive signs that encourage visitors to learn about the habitat around them through the five senses.

Get a glimpse of the extreme backcountry hiking challenges Fishers Peak will offer when fully developed with our Challenge Trail. Our volunteers helped convert an existing ranch road route into an aggressive (a nice way of saying “steep”) 1.5-mile hiking trail. How aggressive? Most professionally-designed trails don’t exceed 8 to 10 percent grades. Their Challenge Trail will have you feeling the burn on stretches that exceed 30 percent grade. The payoff for all the work is a spectacular view of Fishers Peak and the valley below.

The 19,200-acre property connects grasslands to the east with foothills and mountains to the west, serving as an important corridor for wildlife movement. Providing habitat for large native species like elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, mountain lion and black bear, the property helps maintain important connections between these species’ populations in the mountains and those in the prairies.

Is Inflation Killing You? Best Tips for Saving on Groceries, Gas, Eating Out & Household Items

Woah! Ok, so it wasn’t just me seeing those prices rise? I was at my local Safeway and often I grab a bag of puffy hot Cheetos for my kids. One week they were just $2.49. The next, they were $4.29. This was NOT because they were on sale the first week – this was just the price increase. I also noticed that there were several other places where a normal price tag was no longer on the edge of the shelf. Maybe the store was increasing those prices too? What can we do what are the tips and tricks to help minimize the pinch of the increasing prices everywhere?

How to Save at the Grocery Store

·       Get with the Program! This is not just a funny saying. Really, join the Safeway or King Soopers Loyalty Programs.

·       Watch what is on sale and plan your meals around sale and seasonal items. If you are not set on having ham for Easter – pick up a ham on Monday. (I also did this with Corned Beef for St. Patrick’s Day). Grocery stores stock up for those occasions and will put them on sale after the event.

·       Download and/or cut coupons. This is sort of a lost art when it comes to the actual clipped coupons – but in the apps you can digitally clip them!

·       I prefer shopping at my nearest King Soopers (to Safeway) because they do put things on sale – but don’t throw them in a back bin. They put them right where you’d find them normally. But they have a sale-priced sticker (and usually they have an expiration date of just a day or two away). This is more work because you have to go to the store more often, but if it is on your way home or close, you could save a bundle not shopping for a whole week.

·       Plan ahead! Plan to use those leftovers. You can either create a leftover night (we have this often) or you can just plan a whole other meal. We often get a rotisserie chicken eat it as just that the first night and then the second time around we may do a chicken pasta or chicken stir fry using the leftovers of the rotisserie.

·       Cook from home kits. I have tried several of these – on a whole, I don’t think they are really less expensive than just getting the items from the store. But they do often offer money off for new subscribers to try their services (I saved over $100 in a few weeks from each, Home Chef, Blue Apron and Every Plate). Then cancel the service.

·       Go with a list and a plan. When you head to the grocery store, head there with a plan of what you need, what you are going to cook and the other items you may need. Do your best not to deviate from that list. It is very easy to drive your cart past and end cap and think, “that is a great deal.” And then spend way more than what you were expecting to.

·       Shop alone. I don’t know about you but my kids are great salespeople. They can sell me the reason why they need those Puffy Hot Cheetos (and a bunch of other things).

·       This may go without saying since this is in the save from the Grocery Store section – but, cook at home! Yes, cooking at home is generally less expensive than eating out.

How to Save When You Eat Out

·       Watch for great deals and promotions (we write about them weekly if we know of them – right here at MileHighMamas.com). Things like buy one get one free (loads usually for special days ie. Tax Day, Pi Day, etc). Take advantage of regular promos like Rockies score 7 runs you can get 4 tacos for $2. (You could barely make them for that cost – unless you have a really big family).

·       If you have a special event that you want to dine out for – try going at lunchtime (instead of dinner).

·       Duh! Use those coupons. Sign up for their loyalty clubs if you love somewhere or go there often.

·       Skip the drinks (soda too). We usually just drink water while dining out.

·       If you have to eat out – can you eat out by picking it up? This will save you a ton on tips (do still tip the person running it to your car – but usually a couple bucks is fine, you don’t have to tip the full 15-20% that is suggested when you eat in.

·       Kids eat free and Happy Hours! Timing is your best friend. You can often get deals on drinks or appetizers during happy hours (we have sometimes just had appetizers and called it dinner) and visit where you get something for free. Several restaurants have buy one entrée and get a kids meal for free. Use those!

How to Save on Household Items

·       Aurora is one of the first cities to no longer charge tax on diapers. While I won’t advocate driving all the way across town just for diapers, if you are close or need to be in Aurora for some reason, you may want to head over there for your diapers.

·       Check apps like Amazon to see if they have digital coupons or often the subscribe option helps save you money. You can always opt out of the subscribe part (subscribe to save money only and not get regular shipments of the item).

·       Try to make some things yourself. Cleaning glass? Try a mix of water and vinegar (I also put the lemon rind in mine to make it smell better).  Looking for a kitchen cleaner? Try baking soda and water.

·       Use Borax powder. This little box can help with all kinds of household things including heavy duty scrubbing, laundry booster, eliminating pests and insects, unclogging drains, even preserving flowers or helping make slime for the kids!

How to Save on Gas

·       See my note of saving at the grocery store. Join the grocery store program. When you purchase at the grocery store you can get points – every 100 points allows you a 10-cent discount at the pump.

·       Download apps like Gas Buddy to help identify where the cheapest gas is around you.

·       Join a club like Costco or Sam’s Club. The gas at these stations are typically 10 to 20 cents cheaper than the least expensive gas stations nearby.

·       Driver smarter. Avoid storing cargo in your vehicle. Avoid excessive idling. Make sure your engine is properly tuned up. Make sure your tires are properly inflated.

·       Pay attention. Honestly, I drive up and down Santa Fe daily, some gas stations charge up to 30 cents more per gallon than if you just drove down the street a bit. If you take a regular route – try to look a couple times. See if there is some consistent differences. The station that is on the West side of the road is cheaper than the Shell station Northbound on the East side of the road near Arapahoe Community College always by about 30 cents.

No matter if you are buying groceries, going out to eat, trying to save in your home in general or trying to save on gas, having a plan matters. Paying attention can save you a lot of money! Cents and pennies do add up – and they add up more if they are $2 more on little things like a simple bag of Cheetos.

Was Former DougCo superintendent illegally fired? Get the full story!

Have you been following the ongoing saga in Douglas County? Colorado Public Radio does a fantastic job breaking it all down.

====

Corey Wise, the former Douglas County School District superintendent who was fired in February, has filed a discrimination and retaliation complaint with federal and state offices against the school district and four board members on Thursday. The complaint alleges that his termination was unlawful because of his attempts to protect students with disabilities and for his advocacy of the district’s equity policy.

Wise doesn’t contend that he personally was discriminated or retaliated against because of his race, color, religion, sex, national origin or disability, but alleges it was his advocacy on behalf of protected classes such as students with disabilities, youth and staff of color and LGBTQ+ individuals that led to his firing.

“The new Board majority associated Mr. Wise with such protected groups, and unlawfully fired him for that association and advocacy,” states the 33-page charge of discrimination document. It was filed Wednesday morning with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Colorado Civil Rights Division, which has its own anti-discrimination laws and enforcement unit.  The document is a procedural step before Wise can file a job discrimination lawsuit.

The Benefits of Theatre for Kids: Wolf Theatre Academy Returns

The benefits of participating in theatre-related activities for kids go far, far beyond what may be most apparent—that is, providing an avenue for your extroverted young person to get involved in “show business” by joining the cast of a play or musical and getting a chance to be seen by adoring audience members. In fact, while this may be an important driving factor in a child’s desire to take a theatre class or register for a camp, their participation directly results in positive developmental growth across myriad areas regardless of the age at which they begin their theatrical journey.

Some of these benefits are profound, yet not always obvious, and include:

  • Community building: Each theatre class or production involves the subtle, yet crucial establishment and sustenance of a specific “ad hoc” community in which kids learn to contribute to a set of goals beyond their own, respect the needs of others, and work within a diverse group of individuals to achieve something extraordinary.
  • Brain development: Research has demonstrated clearly that the performing arts contribute to important cognitive growth in young people. Their involvement in memorization, physical and spatial awareness, interpersonal communication, and other critical areas through the theatrical process give them a tremendous “leg up” in these areas, all of which are important in virtually every other aspect of their lives.
  • Artistic and cultural appreciation: Each class, camp, or production becomes its own unique world for kids who participate in theatre activities, and in this way they are exposed to some of the most important literary, musical, and artistic works in our canon. And increasingly, theatre for young people is more and more aware of the need to create inclusive environments for historically underrepresented groups, whether from a racial, economic, cultural, or identity perspective. In short, kids in theatre grow up to be adults with empathy and perspective.

At Wolf Theatre Academy, we’re building back our renowned programs to shine brighter than ever before, and our developmental approach guarantees that our professional staff takes an interest in the personal and artistic growth of each of our young actors, singers, dancers, designers, and technicians. This summer’s productions of Roald Dahl’s “Matilda: The Musical” from June 6-26 and William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” from July 11-13 for high school-aged kids, and our Wolf Theatre Academy Jr. productions of “Schoolhouse Rock Jr.” from June 6-17, “The Phantom Tollbooth” from June 20-July 1 and “High School Musical Jr.” from July 11-22 promise to help young kids and blossoming artists grow—and most importantly, have the time of their lives!

Denver’s Best Playgrounds: The Most Insanely Unique Playground Equipment

What better way to celebrate spring than to soak up the sunshine in one of metro Denver’s parks? Bring your kids and discover the many features offered by our playgrounds! And I’m not talking about slides, climbing nets, or spinners… those are just so “meh” in 2022. No, a few Denver playgrounds offer something else: rare play equipment that is found only at one or a handful of playgrounds in all of the metro area parks. Read on and explore the unusual features you won’t see anywhere else!

The parks showcased below are part of my iPhone app “Denver Playgrounds & Parks,” which reviews over 770 metro Denver playgrounds. You will find photos, descriptions, and features of each play area, with updates released frequently. Come locate a playground near you, no matter what part of town you’re in. The Coolest Features at Denver Playgrounds

Horizontal roller slide

Roller slides have been around for about a decade, but these horizontal variants are new. They remind me of an airport luggage conveyer, but these are for people, not suitcases. Even adults looking for a gentle back massage have been spotted on these slides.

Found at: Clement Park and Berry Park (Littleton)Horizontal Roller Slide

Dual baby-adult swing

You can find 2-person “friendship” swings at many Denver playgrounds, but only Carmody Park and Creekside Park feature this tandem swing designed specifically for a little one plus an accompanying adult or older child.

Found at: Carmody Park (Lakewood), Creekside Park (Aurora), and North Creek Park (Thornton).

Dual Mommy and me swing

Super-wide slide

There is no fighting over who gets to slide down first on this wide slide at Fairmount park – it can easily accommodate 2 or 3 kids simultaneously. Other playgrounds feature wide slides that are made out of concrete and are landscaped into a natural hill side.

Found at: Fairmount Park (Golden), Sanchez Park (Denver), Long’s Pine Grove (Denver), Grant Park (Littleton)Denver's super wide slide

Double zip line

Zip lines are becoming increasingly popular with playground designers. But only one park in the metro area features a set of tandem zip line tracks, perfect for a friendly race between two kiddos. Who will win?

Found at: Amber Creek Park (Thornton)Double Zipline in Denver

Flat-top spinner

It seems that spinners are found at nearly every modern play area these days. But can you hold on to the flat surface when this spinner starts going? Unlike others, this one is inclined so it is easier to start spinning.

Found at: Orchard Park (Englewood) and Big Dry Creek Park (Westminster)Flat Top Spinner

4-person seesaw

Got four people? Load them on this seesaw and see who can sway the most. These teeter-totters are spring-mounted, so there is a lot of up and down motion. There’s even additional room in the center for enjoying the rocking motion while standing up.

Found at: Berry Park (Littleton), Crofton Park (Broomfield), Jewell Park
(Aurora), Skylake Park (Thornton)4-person seesaw

Super tall slide

How about climbing 6 flights of stairs to ride a slide? A few Denver parks feature these extra-tall tunnel slides, making for a nice long ride down. These play towers typically have several slides at different heights to chose from.

Found at: Estates Park (Golden), Arapaho Park (Centennial), Memorial Park (Arvada), East
Elementary Park (Littleton), Elati Park (Littleton), Denver Premium Outlets (Thornton)Denver's tallest slide

Suspended rope

Pile your whole family onto this hanging rope! You can get pretty wild on this swing, once you have it going. It’s sturdier than it looks and super fun.Suspended Rope

Found at: Pagosa Park (Aurora), Globeville Landing Park (Denver)
