Free First Day Hikes and Ice Fishing Clinics

On January 1, 2020, Colorado Parks and Wildlife invites all Coloradans to welcome in a new year by heading outside to enjoy the trails in a Colorado State Park. 

First Day Hikes offer a chance to start the new year right by getting people out for some exercise in nature. Each participating park offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the new year, with most parks offering guided hikes and some parks providing multiple options to choose from, allowing you to select the time and route you prefer.

    • Many parks are also offering refreshments and free giveaways for this event.
    • The hikes ​​are free but park visitors must possess a valid parks pass to participate. 
    • It is up to the individual park regarding reservations or RSVP. Please check each park’s event details.​
    • All First Day Hikes will vary in ability levels and length depending on location and weather conditions.​​​​ 
    • Bring snacks and water, dress in layers and be prepared with traction and/or trekking poles for winter hiking in snow or on icy trails; if there is snow, consider bringing snowshoes.

Staunton State Park-First Day Hike Around the Top!
Wednesday, January 1

The hike is free, but a parks pass is required. Meet at the Ranch Hand Group Picnic area at 830am. The hike is moderate, and will be 11.4 miles with an optional cutoff to make it 8 miles. Bring everything you need for a hike including water, snacks, layers, and traction devices/snowshoes depending on conditions. Leashed pets are permitted. Enjoy an adventurous hike up one of the Park’s most stunning rocky canyons. This hike includes cascading falls of Mason Creek, aspen groves, creek crossings. Travel across the highest trails of Staunton enjoying amazing vistas from the overlooks of Bear Paw and Borderline!! The Old Mill site is included in this hardy hike. The return route continues along Staunton Ranch trail to the meadows Parking lot.

Chatfield State Park- First Day Hike: Historic Nature Walk
Wednesday, January 1

Join a Chatfield Naturalist Volunteer for a historic nature walk through the prairie. Listen to the ice sing in nearby ponds while admiring the foothill views on a leisurely 3 miles walk to the Discovery Gazebo and back. Enjoy a provided cup of warm cocoa upon your return!

Yampa River State Park 1st Day Hike
Wednesday, January 1

Join us for a 1 mile snowshoe around Yampa River Headquarters. Visitors are welcome to borrow a pair of snowshoes for the event. End your hike at our visitor center with hot chocolate, coffee, and snacks.

St. Vrain- First Day Hike
Wednesday, January 1

Welcome in 2020 at our First Day Hike. Join our rangers and others for a 2 mile hike around Pelican Pond. There will be a stop for drinks and snacks.

Roxborough- First Day Hike: Carpenter Peak
Wednesday, January 1

Enjoy the New Year with a hike up to Carpenter Peak. This is an exhilerating hike with gorgeous views!

Mueller- Elk Meadow Hike
Wednesday, January 1

Enjoy a hike through forest and meadow on gentle hills. Watch for signs of wildlife with Volunteer Naturalist Rose. Great views of Pikes Peak! 2.5-mile, moderate hike. Dress for the weather!

AHRA First Day Hike

Join us in celebrating the new year with this nationwide First Day Hike of 2020 event! This guided hike features beautiful mountain and rugged shallow canyon scenery with sweeping views of the Upper Arkansas Valley and the snow-capped Sawatch mountains.

Ridgway- First Day Hike: Dallas Creek Nature Trail
Wednesday, January 1

Take a stroll through open fields with tall cottonwoods, navigate along the shores of Dallas Creek and scramble through Pinion-Juniper forests within the rocky outcroppings of Log Hill Mesa. Catch some spectacular view of Mt. Sneffels and the San Juan range. Walk through the hiding places of many birds and animals and see if you can spot some trout in the creek on our way by! If snow conditions are good, this “hike” can be cross-country skied.

Staunton State Park First Day Hike-The Ranch Loop
Wednesday, January 1

This hike will depart from the Ranch Hand Group Picnic Area at Staunton at 930am. The hike will be 5.25 miles and is easy depending on snow conditions. The hike is free, but a valid Parks Pass is required. Children 5 and older are welcome, as well as leashed pets. Bring everything you need for hiking such as water, food, and layers. We also recommend spikes/traction devices/snowshoes depending on conditions. This hike will begin at the Ranch Hand Group Picnic Area and will travel down the relatively flat Davis Ponds Loop. We will then connect with the Chase Meadow Trail and discus the importance of this historic property. We will then connect with the Staunton Ranch Trail (the ‘main street’ of Staunton’s 30 mile trail system) traveling downhill to the Dines Meadow Connector Trail. We will cross a beautiful meadow to a connection with the Mason Creek Trail. We will go uphill and explore two newly constructed rest areas including a frozen cascading waterfall. We’ll double back downhill on Mason Creek to the Staunton Ranch Trail where we will hike back to the Group Picnic Area. Volunteer Guides: Mark and Sandy Fisher

Staunton State Park First Day Hike-Search for Sasquatch
Wednesday, January 1

This hike will depart from the Meadow Parking Lot at 0930am. The hike goes down Staunton Ranch Trail to Scout Line and Marmot Passage. It will be 7 miles and is moderate. A valid Parks Pass is required but the hike is free. Children and leashed pets are welcome. Bring everything you need for hiking such as water, food, and layers. We also recommend binoculars and spikes/traction devices/snowshoes depending on conditions. This 7-mile loop is rated moderate and heads up the Staunton Ranch trail, then switchbacks up Scout Line to Marmot Passage trail. The hike then descends back to Staunton Ranch trail for a three-mile return to the parking lot. Mountain vistas make this hike a special way to start the new year. Golden Gate Canyon State Park- First Day Hike

Please join us on January 1st, 2020 for our Annual First Day Hikes! Interested hikers can join us for one of two guided hikes. We will offer an out and back 3 mile hike on Burro Trail to City Lights Ridge and a 5 mile loop hike on Horseshoe and Black Bear Trail.

First Day Hikes offer a chance to start the new year right by getting people out for some exercise in nature. We will have a guided hike starting from the Campground Office. Hot cocoa and coffee will be available. Dress warm!

Staunton State Park First Day Hike-History and Geology
Wednesday, January 1

This hike will depart from the Ranch Hand Group Picnic Area at 10am and will go to the Red Cliffs climbing area. The hike is between 4-5 miles and is moderate. A valid Parks Pass is required but the hike is free. Children and leashed pets are welcome. Bring everything you need for hiking such as water, food, and layers. We also recommend spikes/traction devices/snowshoes depending on conditions. Hikers will see meadows, pine forests, aspen tree groves, unique rock formations, wildlife, cabins and much more. Staunton State Park First Day Hike-Old Mill
Wednesday, January 1

This hike will meet at 10am at the Ranch Hand Group Picnic area. The hike will follow Staunton Ranch Trail to Old Mill Trail, with an option to continue on to Borderline Trail. It will be 6-8 miles and is moderate. The hike is free, but a valid Parks Pass is required. Children and leashed pets are permitted. Bring everything you need for a hike including food, water, and layers. We also recommend spikes/traction devices/snowshoes depending on the conditions. Follow Black Creek up to the site of the Staunton’s saw mill site. Visit the remaining bunk house and the remains of the mill itself. An interesting look at early 1900’s engineering and history. Lory State Park First Day Hike / Bike/ Horseback Ride

Lory State Park will host First Day hikes, bike ride, and horseback Ride. Hikes and bike ride begin at 10 am, horseback ride begins a 10:30am. Please register in advance by calling the park visitor center at 970-493-1623.

Steamboat Lake- First Day Sledding!
Wednesday, January 1

Join Steamboat Lake staff in welcoming in the New Year with sledding, s’mores, and hot drinks. Optional hike afterwards.

Stagecoach- 1st Day Hike
Wednesday, January 1

Join us for our annual guided 1 mile snowshoe hike up Pinnacle Peak to ring in the new year! Campfire refreshments served following the hike. Meet at the Arrowhead Group Picnic Area at 10 a.m.

Staunton State Park-First Day Bike
Wednesday, January 1

Come join some of the staff from Evergreen Mountain Sports for a First Day Bike! They will have two groups-one going for a faster paced ride for 1.5-2 hours, the other a slower casual ride. Both rides will meet at 10am at the Meadow Parking Lot. Trails are TBD depending on trail conditions. The ride is free, but a valid parks pass is required. Bring everything you need for a bike ride including layers, water, and food. Registration is not required.

Mueller- Wapiti Trail Hike

Explore the nature trail in winter splendor! Discover what wildlife are active in winter. Led by Volunteer Naturalist Charlene. 1-mile, moderate hike. Dress for the weather!

James M. Robb Colorado River State Park First Day Hike
Wednesday, January 1

Join a Park Ranger for a guided nature hike at Connected Lakes. Meet at the Kingfisher parking lot at 10am. The event is free with an annual parks pass or a daily parks pass. Passes are available at the entrance to the park. Be prepared for any type of weather!

Chatfield State Park- First Day Hike: Scenic Nature Trail for All Ages and Abilities
Wednesday, January 1

Join a Chatfield Naturalist Volunteer for a scenic nature trail for all ages and abilities. Look for white tail deer and birds of prey as you slowly ascend to your final destination at the top of the Chatfield Dam. Enjoy tjhe views and the fresh air as you ring in the New Year with a provided warm cup of cocoa.

Roxborough- First Day Hike: Fountain Valley Trail

Enjoy the New Year with a hike around the Fountain Valley Trail. This is a fun family hike wih two overlooks!

Ridgway- First Day Hike: Cookie Tree Trail
Wednesday, January 1

Navigate down the mesa along the shore of Ridgway Reservoir; scramble through Pinion-Juniper forests and rocky outcroppings. Catch some spectacular views of Mt. Sneffels and the San Juan range. Walk through the hiding places of many birds and animals!

Mueller- Forest Bathing Walk
Wednesday, January 1

Enjoy a fresh, new start to the year by immersing yourself in the joy & wonder of nature through the relaxing practice of Forest Bathing (from the Japanese,”shinrin-yoku”). Join Volunteer Naturalist Carrie and Forest Therapy Guide Jane Scanlon for this mindful, slow wander with simple “invitations” for activities to quiet your mind, awaken your senses and connect closely with nature. We’ll end with the sharing of forest tea! Bring sit pad/stool if you have one, water & dress for the weather – snow boots, waterproof pants suggested (there will be some sitting). Ages 9 and up. Maximum 12. Must pre-register at the Visitors Center via walk-in or by calling (719)687-2366.

Barr Lake- 1st Day Hike

Barr Lake State Park will be participating in America’s State Parks First Day Hikes 2020 and we hope you’ll join us. With all 50 states participating, the nationwide effort will help promote healthy lifestyles and encourage year-round recreation at our state parks.

Sylvan Lake State Park First Day Hike
Wednesday, January 1

Join us for a 1.5 mile snowshoe around Sylvan Lake, with an option to go further if you wish. End your hike at our day-use area with hot chocolate, coffee, and snacks. Leashed pets welcome. Bring your own snowshoes, or borrow a pair of ours!

State Forest State Park- First Day Hike
Wednesday, January 1

Join us at 12:00 pm at the Moose Visitor Center for a First Day Hike. We will lead a guided walk for 3 miles on the Gould Loop. This event is free with a daily vehicle park pass for $8 or annual pass. Bring your water, snacks, boots, plenty of warm layers and cross country skis or snowshoes. We have snowshoes for rent at the Moose Visitor Center for $5 per pair!

Lake Pueblo State Park First Day Hike

Join us in celebrating the new year with this nationwide First Day Hike of 2020 event! This guided hike features beautiful scenery of Lake Pueblo State Park.

Ridway- First Day Hike: Oak Leaf Trail
Wednesday, January 1

Meander through scrub oak and rocky cliff sides. Enjoy the views amongst tall Ponderosa Pines and walk along the spectacular Uncompahgre River. This hike is sure to give you a feeling of serenity and peace. Many birds can be heard and deer may be seen. If your eyes are real sharp, spotting a large brown trout may even be possible.

Ice Fishing
 
Have you always wanted to learn how to ice fish? Have you tried ice fishing but want to learn some tips and tricks for catching more fish? Want a fun activity to do with friends and family this winter, that doesn’t cost too much? Then these clinics are exactly what you have been looking for.
 
These clinics are free and Colorado Parks and Wildlife provide all the fishing gear. Or, you can bring your own gear and they will help you get it set up. All you need are warm clothes, a fishing license and your warm drinks and snacks.
