New statewide trails app showcases 39,000+ miles of trails!

If you’re hoping to explore Colorado, Gov. John Hickenlooper just made it that much easier.

The governor announced the launch of a new state app with guidance to more than 39,000 miles of trails as nearly 550 tourism industry stakeholders gathered last week in Vail for the annual Colorado Governor’s Tourism Conference.
 
The Colorado Trail Explorer (COTREX) app puts data for 39,158 miles of trail and 1,431 trailheads in the hands of users across the state and is now available for free download in the Apple and Google Play stores. A facet of the Colorado the Beautiful initiative, the COTREX app makes it easier than ever for Coloradans and visitors alike to access the state’s trailheads and open space.  Trails are searchable by horses, bikes, motorcycles, dogs, hiking, ATVS and OHVs, family-friendly, length, level of difficulty and much more.

Crater Lakes via Moffat Tunnel East Portal

  • Total Length 5.9mi
  • Ascent 2,184ft
  • Difficulty Moderate

A highly trafficked out and back trail to the Crater Lakes and the alpine lake above them. The two lakes are extremely picturesque with easily traversable flat terrain around them. The first 2 miles of this trail climbs very gradually and only contains about 1/2 mile of steady steeper climbing at the end to reach the two lakes. The optional climb to the alpine lake is quite steep but very short and offers a fantastic view of the two Crater Lakes and valley below.
