Theatre games bring out the best in all of us. They’re fun, they’re engaging, they make us laugh, they let us play. But sometimes we’re afraid others will make fun of us for being silly, or for the way we laugh, or because we like to play.
In December of 2016, The Five Points Theatre Club was afraid. Afraid because what if we created a free, monthly theatre workshop for the community, and nobody wanted to come play? But we didn’t let our fear stop us. And guess what? Guess how many people came to play and laugh and be silly?
Do you have a number?
It’s probably too high.
Is your guess five? Lower.
Three? Lower.
One?!?! Lower.
No one. No one came to play.
But we persevered. In January 2017 we had our second monthly theatre workshop. And guess what?!?! People came. Not a lot. Not twenty or ten or even five, but we had three. And let me tell you, three feels like a lot when you’re working your way up from zero.
So we had another workshop in February. Then in March. Again in April, May, June…–you get the picture—and every month more and more students came to play, be silly, laugh, and have fun. Not just kids, but mothers and fathers and grandparents and aunts and uncles and friends and co-workers.
Last month nearly thirty-five students of all ages attended our free, monthly theatre workshop—ACTING OUT! We haven’t done anything different, we just continued our belief that students love to play, parents love to play, grandparents love to play. And let’s face it, theatre games do bring out the best in all of us.
Are you and your family looking for a free, fun, engaging theatre activity? We would love for you to join The Five Points Theatre Club staff and their teachers for ACTING OUT! and our brand new ACTING OUT JR!, recommended for students age seven and under.
ACTING OUT! meets every second Saturday of the month at the Mercury Café Denver—next installment is May 12th—from 12:30 -2:00 p.m., with ACTING OUT JR! taking place directly before it from 11:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
