The perfect graduation present or baby shower gift: Blueberry Girl
posted by: Guest Blogger
During graduation season, the website Mighty Girl often hears from supporters asking if they can recommend an inspiring book to give to a graduating young lady. While there are several great choices, one of their favorites is Neil Gaiman’s “Blueberry Girl,” which beautifully conveys a parent’s wishes and dreams for his or her Mighty Girl. This gorgeously-illustrated picture book was written by Gaiman for his friend, singer Tori Amos, when she was about to become the mother of a little girl.
Aptly described as “A magical blessing for unconventional girls, it follows a baby as she grows into a young woman and, in rhyming text, offers dreams of what every parent wishes for her child — “Ladies of light and ladies of darkness and ladies of never-you-mind…. Keep her from spindles and sleeps at sixteen/Let her stay waking and wise.”
Though written as a picture book in simple language, this poetic tribute to courageous and adventurous girls will resonate with girls of all ages and especially with tweens and teens embarking on any life transition. The stunning illustrations by Charles Vess show a diverse array of girls so every Mighty Girl can see herself in this story. It’s been frequently compared to Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” and, for anyone seeking a lovely baby shower gift, it will likely appeal to many new parents as well.

The loving and affirming tone of this book always reminds us of our favorite poem honoring Mighty Girls which we’ve shared on this page previously — Sarah McMane’s “For My Daughter” at http://www.amightygirl.com/blog/?p=268
