Denver man teaches yoga to kids with special needs

Chris Capitelli isn’t your average Denver man–he teaches yoga to children with special needs.

In the summer of 2014 he partnered with a New York-based non-profit named Pop.Earth to bring their holistic yoga classes to Colorado. Pop.Earth’s mission is to provide health and wellness options to those with Autism & Developmental Disorders for low cost to free. The classes incorporate aromatherapy, breathing techniques, visual and auditory focusing tools, along with yoga poses. He also does massage and energy work with the children while they are in relaxation pose to help them deeply relax and release stress and tension from their bodies.

“Parents and I have seen some truly amazing shifts in the children that have attended the classes regularly,” says Chris. “They are able to focus and have longer attention spans. I have also noticed a decrease in muscle tension, as well as increased strength and flexibility. The kids generally report feeling happy and more at ease after class. I give the parents the option to drop their kids off for class, but most join us and we all practice together. It is a really great bonding experience for the whole family.

Chris testifies that yoga has been a tremendous healing and powerful force in his life and he is passionate about sharing it with children, especially those that might not otherwise get the chance and that is why he was drawn to work with children who have special needs.

“I teach two classes a week at this point, one in Boulder and one in Henderson. My goal is to grow this program to reach more individuals and serve more families. Being a parent is challenging enough, and having a child with disabilities presents another set of challenges. I have seen these classes become a huge support for the participants and their families. Classes are open to all, regardless of their age or disability.”

The first class is free to see if it is suitable for your loved one. After that classes are $10, and a 4 punch card can be purchased for $32. Details and locations of classes are below.

Chris has always felt that our inner world and energetic selves are reflected in our bodies and outside world. If issues are not addressed on this level the healing is not complete.
