PALS Summer Chess Camps: Learning Critical-Thinking Skills the Fun Way!

Are you looking for a fun, unique and highly educational summer camp for your children? PALS Chess Academy is proud to offer several Summer Chess Camps in the Greater Denver Area taught by current Colorado State Chess Champion and former two-time scholastic National Champion Lior Lapid! Whether your children are completely new to the game or intermediate/advanced players, we divide the campers into two or more groups in order to provide personalized instruction for all participants. Our campers have a lot of fun while learning valuable lessons that build character, problem-solving skills, teamwork, confidence and intelligence throughout life.

Each MondayFriday camp is filled with creative lessons on chess strategy in all phases of the game.   One or more assistant coaches will be present to help with the various group lessons.  We follow our own step-by-step curriculum to ensure children learn according to a structured progression of ideas. Lior’s teaching style incorporates humor and storytelling and an extensive theater background to creatively engage children in every lesson!

About our Head Coach:  Lior is ranked as a National Master and is a former two-time National Champion in the K-9 and K-12 divisions.  He has 20 years of experience teaching chess in schools and has been the head coach at chess camps for children in New York, Virginia, New Mexico, Colorado and Israel. He was invited to present a talk on his methods of chess instruction and student motivation at the Koltanowski Conference for Chess Education in Dallas. Additionally, Lior has been featured in Chess Life, Chess Life Online, and several smaller publications, and was named an “Outstanding Coach” by the New Mexico Chess Organization.

Chess Camp Description: Our camps balance learning with playing, and students are divided into groups (after a preliminary assessment) to maximize player success. Students learn:

  • Tactics and strategies in all phases of chess (opening, middlegame, endgame).
  • Group challenges and presentations reinforce students’ teamwork and leadership skills.
  • Chess history through analysis of famous games and historical anecdotes.
  • Special activities like bughouse (team chess), battleship chess, piece mazes, chess stories and riddles, creative problem-composing and problem-solving, and more!

We have two 20-minute recesses, during which kids will get plenty of exercise playing games like soccer, basketball, capture the flag, and more.  Water and healthy snacks are provided during each recess.  Lunch is from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. each day; full-day students must bring their own lunch. Half-day students are welcome to stay for lunch.

On the last day of chess camp we will end with group presentations for parents and an awards ceremony with prizes for all!  Each camper will receive their own tournament chess set, a PALS Chess Academy t-shirt and a personalized certificate.
