In the month of May, visitors to the Audubon Nature Center have the exciting opportunity to watch research in action while seeing warblers, sparrows, woodpeckers, thrushes, and other songbirds at the bird banding station in partnership with Bird Conservancy of the Rockies.
“The bird banding station at the Audubon Nature Center provides a unique look into the life journey of these amazing little animals” according to Community Outreach Coordinator, Kate Hogan. “To have this personal encounter with wild song birds is an unforgettable family experience, creating memories that last a lifetime, and fostering a new appreciation for the migration that’s happening all around us during the spring season.”
An ornithologist (bird researcher) will be attaching bands onto the legs of wild birds to help track their migratory path throughout the United States and beyond. The station is open to the public, weather permitting, from 7:30 am -11 am beginning Sunday May 1, Saturday May 7, Sunday May 15, Saturday May 21, Sunday May 22, Saturday May 28, and concluding Sunday May 29.
The banding station offers an excellent educational experience for children and adults to learn about wildlife research, bird identification, migration, and our local habitats. Most children and adults rarely have the unique opportunity to visit a research station and see birds in hand. Why do bird scientists (ornithologists) band birds? The data they collect provides valuable information about a variety of bird species, the health of their populations, and their migration patterns.
Join their flock of supporters for this popular spring activity!
