Celebrate Pi Day with these fun activities and treats

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.

What is Pi?

According to PiDay.org, Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits.

Here are a few fun ways to celebrate Pi Day.

  • NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has crafted a stellar math challenge to show students of all ages how NASA scientists and engineers use the mathematical constant pi.

    • Teachers submitted these fun ideas for celebrating Pi Day that includes making Pi Plates, sharing the story of “‘Sir Cumference and the Knights of the Round Table,” Pi Bracelets and more.pi
    • And my personal favorite way to celebrate Pi Day is with pie! For the second year in a row, our friends have invited us to their Pi(e) Party tonight where everyone brings their favorite pie to share. This year, I made this Almond Joy Pie from Live, Love and Sugar. pie

Fortunately, there’s not an infinity of calories, right?

  1. How cute is this? I’ve never heard of celebrating Pi Day but any excuse to eat Pie and I’m there. Thinking I need to pull something together last-minute.

  2. Mindy–my friends pulled their party together last-minute last year and it was such a hoot they decided to make it an annual tradition. Because who doesn’t love an excuse to eat pie?
