Denver mom spotlight: 9News’ TaRhonda Thomas

You have known her as the dynamic morning reporter on 9News since 2007.  TaRhonda Thomas is a happily married Denver mom of three kids: a boy and two girls who are “the funniest people I know!” We sat down with TaRhonda to talk about motherhood, work-life balance and those early mornings. What kind of a transition did you have after you became a mom? I’m waaaaay more patient than I ever thought I’d be! Before children, I was a lot more quick-tempered. I thought that was just part of me. But having those little ones really calmed me down. I never thought I could be patient through things like potty training and hissy fits. That transition was big for me. I also have learned in about the past year to let some things go. It’s OK to skip something on my “to do” list… but, boy,...

12 Easy and Fun Leap Year Activities

Have you ever had a stroke of brilliance that you completely forgot about? That would be me! One of my New Year’s resolutions has been to completely organize every room in my house and I’m almost finished except for the Garage of Doom. During said purging, I encountered a time capsule that my family pulled together last leap year to be opened February 29, 2016.  The kids are so excited to see what we saved for our future selves!  Here are some ideas for celebrating leap day on February 29, 2016. How to explain Leap Year to kids A leap year is a year that has one extra day in it. Most years have 365 days, but a leap year has 366 days and occurs roughly every four years. The extra day is added onto the end of the shortest month so February has 29 days (instead...

Restaurant Review: Juicy Burgers and Dogs with Green Plate Kate

Weekends are for family and we are always on the hunt for family-friendly restaurants that use quality ingredients and delicious food at a reasonable price. We were on the south end of town and craving burgers so I googled “burgers Denver” and Juicy Burgers and Dogs popped up as close by. A brief glance at their website and I knew we were good to go, so we steered off  the highway at Arapahoe Road, took a quick left on Yosemite and we had arrived! What was it that caught my eye and made this mama bear happy? The quality of their ingredients! Juicy Burgers and Dogs only serves Colorado-sourced, all-natural lamb, chicken and beef. Their beef is fresh never frozen 100% pure ground chuck without additives, fillers or preservatives.  Score one for the team. Their artisan buns are from...

Humor: Are You My Mama?

I was very proud of myself. That should have been the first hint that things would go terribly wrong. My son took to nursing fairly easily. Something that I was super wary about turned into this lovely bonding time for us. You know, the sort of softly-lit, angelically-smiling, inspirational post you’d see on Facebook. There’d be some sort of saying at the bottom of the post … Mamas are their first comfort or some such crap. Around ten months (I think? That first year is all very blurry and fever-dream-esque) my son said his first word: Mama. And I was proud. So proud. We’d formed a real bond, he and I! Being there for him to nurse every three hours around the clock really meant something. I was, in a word, amazing. A wonderful mother, perhaps the best mother ever. I ate a million donuts in...

Blue Skies: Summer Camp Memories at Their Best

Remember summer camp? Blue skies, a clear crystal lake (with cold water, eeek), color wars, and green fields…tennis courts, arts and crafts, nature walks, a brown bear and a blue elephant…main bunk, laughter, friends and amazing memories! This is what I think of when I am brought back to my seven years spent at sleep-away summer camp. My duffle bags were packed by mid-June with pre-stamped and addressed envelopes (a gentle reminder from my parents to write home each week), brown shorts and blue shirts, my stationary collection (lots of trading of stationary during bunk time), bug spray and my cherished bear, Hector the Protector. I was off to camp until the end of August and was already sad for the summer to end even though it had just begun. My summers in Maine will forever be cheri...

Books that Will Get Your Upper Elementary and Early Middle School Boys (and Girls!) Reading

One of the most asked questions that I get as a librarian is for book suggestions for upper elementary and early middle school boys. Though the main character of each of these books is a tween or teen boy, girls absolutely will enjoy these books also. Grade levels listed are recommendations. Lost in the Sun by Lisa Graff Seven months ago, Trent hit a hockey puck during a pickup game that hit a fellow student in the chest. The boy had an undiagnosed heart condition that caused him to die. Trent feels responsible and goes through the stages of grief throughout the book. He has to realize that sometimes we are a lot harder on ourselves than the world is. There are two curse words used at the beginning of the book. Grades 5-8 Hatchet by Gary Paulsen Thirteen-year-old Brian is on his way to vis...

Deals: Free Days, Children’s Consignment Sale, Aspen and More!

I am a deals girl. I love to get something for cheap and if it is free even better! But I find that I can be a bit skeptical when someone tells me that something is free. It sort of seems like, “Ok, what is the catch?” So I have to tell you I questioned things when my friend Bruce, with Solar City told me there is no upfront out of pocket cost to get solar – and save money on my monthly energy bill (my parents house). Plus, there is a tax credit and incentives from Xcel and I can use clean renewable energy. If you are interested in finding out more click the link here.    Free Day: Visit the Denver Zoo on Thursday, February 18 for FREE.   Colorado Garden and Home Show. Proof that I really am a romantic at heart (and elsewhere)

Our Memorable Valentine’s Day Cards His: To my wife, my true love. I know a place where wishes come true and day-to-day worries seem insignificant, and where the pressures of time and schedules seem a million miles away….

The love story of a reformed, annoying serial dater

To say I was boy crazy growing up would be an understatement. Each page of my teenage diary had the name of a different guy. I didn’t like being boyfriend-less. I wouldn’€™t dump one without knowing there was another waiting in the wings. That pattern continued until I got married. In fact, when my future husband asked my dad for my hand in marriage, my dad later took me aside and asked, “€œNow, which guy is this?” My husband, Secret Agent Man, and I have been going together for many years. I have to admit that I was a little concerned about my own ability to be faithful to one man, given my history as a serial dater. But, when Secret Agent Man came into my life, I gave up my wanton ways and never looked back.
