I have a confession about my time in summer camp.
No, it’s not about sneaking out or playing funny (mean) tricks on fellow campers. It’s that I don’t remember the summer day camps that I went to growing up. Not one. I think I had fun. In fact, I’m sure I had fun because I don’t have any bad memories.
But as I talk to my kids about summer camp, I wish I could tell them about that one great camp that I loved so much I still think about it. An experience that helped shape who I am today. Summer is about having good, old-fashioned fun. At Girls Leadership, we think it’s also about being our authentic selves. A camp that’s fun and empowering? Heck yes.
Girls Leadership Summer Day Camp is five days of great friends, new skills, crazy games and laughing till your stomach hurts. Campers leave the week with the confidence to be true to themselves and the skills to make a difference for others.
Here is what Anya, a GL Alum, had to say about her experience:
What was the most fun part of camp?
The most fun part of camp were the games, especially poop deck and the relay races.
How do you feel like your relationships are different at GL Day Camp?
I think you feel more like your friends are actually your friends. At camp we had full relationships. Everyone made friends. At school you are only friends with a few people, but at camp you were friends with everyone. There were no different groups. Everyone was connected.
How did you feel different at GL Day Camp?
I left like I was being myself. At school I’m good. I do what the teacher says to do. But at GL I can do anything. If I didn’t want to play a game, I didn’t have to. But I felt so included by everyone that I wanted to play. I wasn’t doing what other people said; I was doing what I wanted to do.
How would you describe camp to a friend?
Camp was super fun. There are always different things to do, different options. The counselors are awesome, funny and great. You make a lot of friends who you want to stay in touch with. There are arts and crafts, games, serious talking and you wear crazy clothing. I can’t wait for next year!
At Girls Leadership, we teach girls the skills to know who they are, what they believe, and how to express it, empowering them to create change in their world.
