Rare respiratory virus confirmed at Children’s Hospital of Colorado

A federal lab confirmed that children in Colorado have contracted a rare respiratory virus that is similar to a common cold but can develop into a more serious illness.

Officials with Children’s Hospital of Colorado said Monday the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that three-quarters of the samples they sent to be tested last week are human enterovirus 68.

Hospital officials said last week they had treated more than 900 children since Aug. 18 for severe respiratory illness and admitted 86 to the hospital. Enterovirus was suspected but not confirmed at that time.

They described some of the cases as serious on Monday, but said there have been no fatalities. CLICK TO KEEP READING
