Event Round-up: Highlands Street Fair, Ice Age Fever & More!

Saturday-Sunday. Ice Age fever is raging in Snowmass—join the fun at the Ice Age Spectacular. Presented along with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Spectacular celebrates the 2010 discovery of hundreds of prehistoric fossils in Snowmass. Visitors can touch real fossils uncovered nearby, watch a live broadcast of the dig site in progress and dig around for some “fossils” of their own. The village mall will be hopping with activities, too, like games, jugglers, clowns and more. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Silvertree Conference Center, 100 Elbert Lane; 970-923-3520. Admission is free. snowmassvillage.com

Saturday. Buy Dad a beer and a hot dog at the Highlands Street Fair. Now in its 28th year, the festival gathers local merchants and artisans to celebrate the Highlands neighborhood. Shop among the vendor booths and listen to three stages’ worth of live music, or take a stroll through the classic-car show. Youngsters can hang out in the special Kid Zone: A playground of bounce-houses, face painting and crafting. Start the day early—the first 300 families to visit the Kid Zone get a free goodie bag with a reusable lunchbox, coupons and more. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. 32nd Avenue and Osceola Street. Admission is free. highlands-square.com

Saturday. Catch a unique staging of “Hansel and Gretel” when Theatre-Hikes Colorado presents its adaptation at the Colorado Chautauqua. Instead of staying stationary, audience members hike from scene to scene and watch the action play out in front of them. Since Hansel and Gretel start out by getting themselves lost in the forest, a woodsy, outdoor setting is especially appropriate. Meet at the Picnic Shelter. 11 a.m. Saturday. Colorado Chautauqua, 900 Baseline Road, Boulder; 303-442-3282. Tickets are $19 for adults, $15 for kids age 10 and younger. Buy tickets in advance at chautauqua.org.

Saturday-Sunday. Think cats are untrainable? Get an eyeful of The Amazing Acro-Cats at the Bug Theatre. The troupe of hammy housecats performs a variety of stunts, from jumping through hoops to riding on skateboards. Musical accompaniment is provided by “The Rock Cats” combo—a five-piece, interspecies ensemble. Check out tambourine player Hen-diana Jones, holding their own among the felines. A portion of proceeds from the show will benefit the Cat Care Society. Noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Bug Theatre, 3654 Navajo St.; 303-477-5977. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for kids ages 12 and younger. circuscats.com

Saturday. Summer gets off to a twangy start at the Summer Solstice Music Festival at Clear Creek History Park. Starring bluegrass faves Spring Creek, plus The Mile Markers and Russ Chapman, the family friendly show occurs just a few days before the actual solstice, the official first day of summer. Food and drinks, including beer, will be available at the concert, so bring along a blanket and kick back. 5-9 p.m. Saturday. Clear Creek History Park, 11th and Arapahoe Streets, Golden; 303-278-3557. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the gate for adults; $5 for youth ages 6 to 17. goldenhistorymuseums.org
