Denver’s Memorial Day Events

Don’t miss the chance to instill the importance of Memorial Day with your children. Here are Denver’s area events:

May 27

A Veterans Benefit Informational Town Hall Meeting, hosted by US Department of Veterans Affairs, will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at College Heights Baptist Church, 2035 Church Ave., Alamosa. Veterans and their families can learn about the wide range of VA benefits that they may be entitled to receive, such as medical care, disability benefits, guaranteed home loans, educational benefits and life insurance. There will be an Open House at the Highline Gardens cremation area and Wind Chimes area from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fairmount Cemetery, 430 S. Quebec St., Denver. At 1 p.m., there will be dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremonies for Highline Gardens, Wind Chimes area. There will be light refreshments and an appearance by Craig Silverman. At 1:30 p.m., a free historical walking tour of the cemetery will be led by Fairmount Heritage Foundation volunteers. Info: 303-399-0962.

May 28

The 12th annual Veterans Memorial Day Tribute will be at 11:30 a.m. at the Colorado Veterans Monument across Lincoln Street from the State Capitol, immediately following the annual Memorial Day Parade. The ceremony culminates with the Reading of the Names as the Navy Bell is tolled. Guest speaker will be Col. Steve Beck. Preceding the parade at 9 a.m. is a Wreath Remembrance Ceremony honoring fallen heroes from World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm and the War on Terror. There will be an Open House at the Highline Gardens cremation area and Wind Chimes area from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fairmount Cemetery, 430 S. Quebec St., Denver. Centennial Pipes and Drums Bagpipers will parade from the Historic Tower of Memories down the avenue of flags to the Pavilion of Reflection at 10 a.m. at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary, Cemetery and Arboretum is at 7777 W. 29th Ave., Wheat Ridge. At 10:30 a.m. at the Pavilion of Reflection, there will be a Tribute to Veterans and families, a concert by Boulder Brass Quintet, a dove release and an ice cream social. The 2011 Denver Memorial Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. The public can view the parade along 14th Street to Court Place, to 15th Street and Welton Street, east to 17th Street, then south on Broadway to 14th Avenue. The review stand is between Colfax Avenue and 14th Avenue on Broadway. The Parade is sponsored by the Denver United Veteran’s Council with support from the Denver County Veteran Services Office and the City and County of Denver. Info: denvergov.org/veterans.

RTD service on several bus routes will be detoured during the parade. The following routes will be detoured north- and southbound: 0, 8, 12 and 30. The following routes will be detoured west- and eastbound: 1, 6, 9, 10, 15, 15L, 16, 16L, 20, 28, 32, 48, 52 and 83L. May 29

There will be an Open House at the Highline Gardens cremation area and Wind Chimes area from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fairmount Cemetery, 430 S. Quebec St., Denver. At 2 p.m., there will be a musical concert at the Ivy Chapel. Pianist and vocalist Linda Cusimano will perform a selection of patriotic and Broadway musical hits. Info: 303-399-0962.

While working as a visiting professor at Foreign Trade University in Hanoi, Vietnam, Rob Allerheiligen traveled to various sites around the country collecting soil samples from the battlegrounds tied to the Vietnam War. Allerheiligen, who graduated from Colorado State University in 1967 as a commissioned second lieutenant in the US Marine Corps, spent only a short time in Vietnam during the war. The soil samples collected by Allerheiligen were used in a flower garden at the new Veterans Plaza in Fort Collins. Veterans (and the general public) are invited to the grand opening of the Veterans Plaza from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The dedication ceremony will be at 11 a.m. at the Plaza in Spring Canyon Park, 2626 W. Horsetooth Road, Fort Collins.

An American Flag Skydiving demonstration will be at 7 p.m. at the northeast corner of the cemetery at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary, Cemetery and Arboretum, 7777 W. 29th Ave., Wheat Ridge. A Queen City Jazz Band concert will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Pavilion of Reflection. A fireworks display will be at 8:30 p.m. at the northeast corner of the cemetery. The Aurora Veterans’ Affairs Commission is having a Memorial Day Ceremony at 11:30 a.m. outside the Aurora Municipal Center, 15151 E. Alameda Ave. The ceremony will include an F-16 flyover courtesy of the Buckley Air Force Base and the Colorado Air National Guard 140th Wing. There will also be a bagpipe serenade, performances of the National Anthem and “Taps,” and an address by Col. Brian Patterson, Vice Commander of the 140th Wing Buckley Air Force Base. American Legion, 6230 W. 60th Ave., Arvada, is hosting a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. at the Arvada Cemetery, 5581 Independence St. A Parade will follow the service.

A Memorial Day Service will be at 11 a.m. at Bear Canyon Cemetery, 4191 Christy Ridge, Sedalia. There will be a speaker and also a light lunch at St. Phillip-in-the-Field Episcopal Church.

The Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum and Broomfield Rotary will be at noon at the Broomfield Commons, at 13th and Sheridan Blvd., for ice cream, an F-16 Flyover, The Broomfield Civic Chorus performance, a performance by a local bag pipe and drum band, displays from the Broomfield Veterans Museum, local music, and food for sale from the Broomfield Lions Club.

A Memorial Service will be at 10 a.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 880 E. Wolfensberger Road, Castle Rock. There will be a reading of names. Honors will be presented by the Castle Rock American Legion. Info: 303-688-8265.

The 47th annual Commerce City Memorial Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. at 64th Avenue and Olive Street and will travel west on 64th Avenue to Holly, south on Holly to 62nd Avenue, west on 62nd Avenue to Parkway Drive, then west to Hwy. 2. This year’s theme is “Remember their Sacrifice.”

The Town of Dillon is hosting its annual Memorial Day Service at 10 a.m. at the Dillon Cemetery, on Highway 6 between Swan Mountain Road and the Town of Dillon. Family, friends and neighbors gather to pay tribute to those who have served and gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. The event is presented by Dillon’s Cemetery Advisory Committee in cooperation with Dillon’s Military Recognition Advisory Committee.

Evergreen Cemetery, 1005 S. Hancock, is having free Memorial Day Commemoration event starting at 9 a.m. at the Cemetery Chapel. Members of the Evergreen Cemetery Benevolent Society will be on hand to answer questions. Also, the Historical Marker project will be unveiled. Each month, 10 markers spread throughout the cemetery will highlight stories of people, events and associations with connections to those buried in the cemetery. A service honoring Sgt. First Class Ronald Aaron Girder (Afghanistan), will be at 9 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park, 26624 N. Turkey Creek Road, Evergreen. Info: 303-674-7750 or evergreenmemorialpark.com.

There will be a Nisei Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. at Block 35 in Fairmount Cemetery, 430 S. Quebec St., Denver. The event memorializes the most highly decorated unit of World War II. Comprised almost exclusively of Japanese Americans (who served in the Pacific theatre while their families were held in camps in California), this unit’s unique and selfless heroism is celebrated every year at Nisei memorial on Block 35. Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 Sheridan Blvd., is having a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. The keynote speaker is Major General H. Michael Edwards, the Adjutant General of Colorado. Author Tom Ruck will give a Memorial Day Address. Guest speaker will be Lavonne Liversage, Deputy Network Director, Rocky Mountain Network 19.

Linn Grove Cemetery, in conjunction with the respective military organizations, is having a Memorial Day program at 9 a.m. at Linn Grove Cemetery, 1700 Cedar Ave., Greeley. Bob Bernd will be the Master of Ceremonies of the 137th Linn Grove Memorial Day recognition of those who have served our nation. Congressman Cory Gardner will be the guest speaker. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4666 and American Legion Post 103 are hosting a Memorial Day ceremony at 8 a.m. at Veterans Circle in the Littleton Cemetery, 6155 S. Prince St. There will also be a ceremony at 10 a.m. May30at the Littleton’s World War II Memorial in Ketring Park, 6000 S. Gallup St. El Jebel Pipe Band will perform and there will be a 21-gun Salute provided by the All Veterans Honor Guard. There will be a flyover at the 10 a.m. Observance. The Foothills Detachment 469 Department of Colorado Marine Corps League will have a ceremony at 2:00 p.m. at the Marine Corps Memorial at west 6th Avenue and west Colfax Avenue in Golden.

A Memorial Day ceremony will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at Parker Cemetery, located on Parker Road north of Mainstreet. The keynote speaker will be Brig. General Trulan Eyre. There will be an F-16 flyover.
