Scout’s Honor–A Colorado Mom Needs Your Votes!

“On my honor I will try…”

I can’t even begin to count the number of times I recited my scouting pledge as a child. As the daughter of a life-long scout, my mom enrolled me early and lead my troop for years and years. I earned badges, sold cookies, learned songs that I find myself singing to my children today, and made life-long friendships. While scouting was not my life, it did play a big part of my formative years.

I learned many skills — from first aid to making the perfect s’mores — and probably some bigger life lessons, like when your mom is the troop leader, you don’t get chosen for some of the cool things like going on stage to dance with the Native American performers (um, long story) because it would look like favoritism.

As a mom to three young children today, I want them to have some of the same experiences I enjoyed as a kid. As a mom who’s concerned about the environment, sustainability, and rebuilding a sense of community in our day-to-day lives, I want my children to be in a scouting program that reflects my family’s values. As such, I’ve been volunteering with a new non-profit organization here in Colorado called Green Scouts.

Green Scouts focuses on healthy living and environmental stewardship, teaching youth how to become action-oriented environmental leaders, providing green solutions for today and a safer tomorrow. The organization is shaped like a tree with the roots being our core values of Awareness, Compassion, Courage, Cooperation, Knowledge, Leadership and Respect. The trunk of the tree is our community, from which our branches (troops) extend, and the leaves are our individual members. Green Scouts work is done in the true spirit of community. As an organization, we aim to connect with others and work toward promoting good health and protecting the earth, while also respecting the individuality of everyone involved.

In order to move Green Scouts from a start-up to a thriving organization, we need your help.

Throughout the month of August, Green Scouts will be campaigning for a Pepsi Refresh Grant. Funds from the grant will be used to develop a formal curriculum, train branch leaders, and get branches organized and operational. Thus far, we’ve bounced between #169 and #209, so we could use the help of our Mile High Mamas to vote and spread the good word.

Please become a fan of Green Scouts on Facebook, Tweet it, Blog it, or sing it from the mountain tops but, most importantly, please vote for us every day in August at http://www.refresheverything.com/greenscouts

Our Facebook fans will automatically be entered to win a sweet eco-friendly, muck-free lunch box system from Citizen Pip – just in time for back-to-school. We’re also working on some other fun prizes and goodies from eco-friendly companies, so check in with us often on Facebook. Thank you for your support!
