Mama’s Weekly Picks for Colorado’s Best Family-friendly Events!

Given that it’s the week before Memorial Day (the unofficial start of summer. . .woo hoo!), there is still a bunch of stuff to do. Apparently nobody’s waiting to bring out the white shoes and start partying. You should definitely check out Denverpalooza at the Mercury Café—it is going to be amazing. This is one of those events that I get to talk about, just because I might kind of know someone whose kid might go to one of the schools involved. Theoretically. But I wouldn’t steer you wrong on a fun event, so just go, m’kay? Also, a special note: Sunday, May 17, is the Colorado Colfax Marathon. There’s an expo on Saturday, and a kids’ fun run on Sunday. Go cheer on those runners. They could use it. But also know this: Westbound Colfax will be closed, at least until 1:00. Don’t even think abo...

Never piss off the Mommybloggers

A few weeks ago, as I stood in front of nearly 450 tech nerds for Ignite Boulder, ready to present “Why Mommybloggers Such and What We Can Learn From Them,” I wasn’t all that nervous. OK, maybe a leeeetle. But I knew the people in that room were not nearly as invested in the topic as those who would read it when I hit “publish” for the post on my blog. THAT is when I was really nervous. And I have to say, the comments online stayed really positive. Most people got what I was trying to say. They heard me when I prefaced that I was certainly among the worst of the sucking mombloggers, because I am a combination of all of them. I talk about poop, I think I’m perfect, I complain about my kid, I have bling all over my blog, I yammer on about nothing – a...

Personalize a Book With Your Child for Story Tots’ Giveaway!

**CONTEST CLOSED. CONGRATULATIONS TO WINNER JENNIFER VANDER HAMM** It’s official: Colorado is the Mecca for talented MOMpreneurs. My interactions with Denver mama Jessica Ziegler confirmed this. She has launched Story Tots, a line of super-personalized children’s books she has written and illustrated. And as the daughter of famed New Yorker cartoonist Jack Ziegler, she knows writing…and illustration. It is my daughter Hadley’s birthday this month and I sat down with her to create her book online. She was delighted to be the heroine of her own fairytale. We submitted her choices on the Web site and after just a couple of weeks, I received the finished product in the mail. I will surprise her with it during her birthday party. What I like about Story Tots: it transcends the...

Mama’s Weekly Picks for Colorado’s Best Family-fun Events!

[photopress:mothers_day_graphics_16.gif,thumb,pp_image]Finally, it’s Mother’s Day! Happy celebrating to all of you, and I truly hope you all get to enjoy your day in a way that is special to you. We Mamas don’t get to do that very often, do we? And, as much as we’d like to hog the spotlight this weekend, it’s just not to be. There’s a Shakespeare Festival going on, and let’s not forget Cinco de Mayo. . . no shortage of things to do. Please check before you go, in case anything changes. If I’ve told you once. . . . Also, be sure to check out Cici’s “fondue”raiser on Sunday, May 17th at the Melting Pot in Louisville. Cici is the daughter of a local mom blogger who suffered from an anoxic brain injury when she was 11 months old. There will be a silent auction and many wonder...

Review: Debi Derryberry’s Baby Banana CD

On May 5th, 2009, Debi Derryberry’s Baby Banana CD is being released to the public. Claire and I had the opportunity to check this out, and she loved it! I’d never heard of Baby Banana, but we’re always willing to try new things. Well, I’m so glad we did! Baby Banana can peel back his peels and fly! He has a Gorilla for a Daddy and a Duck for a Momma. Claire loved that they are referred to as Daddy and Momma, because that’s the way it is here in our house, too.

Suddenly schooled in H1N1 reality at my children’s school

My daughter’s face was buried in a pillow she grabbed off the couch. It was Sunday night. We had just finished watching a news segment about the kids’ school. A reporter stood in front of the building looking properly furrowed as she gave the grim news: The H1N1 flu had arrived in our community, infecting a schoolmate and possibly siblings and friends. Consequently, the state had recommended closing the school for the week. “Are you embarrassed or scared?” I asked. “Both!” she groaned. She was rightfully worried about the classmate and embarrassed that her school’s new-found notoriety wasn’t positive. Flipping to every channel and seeing your beloved school behind frowning reporters was disconcerting and worrisome to our kids. In retrospect, ...
