It’s no wonder they don’t want to leave those play structures!

When my daughter was young, one of our favorite places to play is a local play-area at a Rec Center near us. The indoor play-structure was built with a tree house theme in mind, and all of the tunnels stretch out above the room, like the branches of a tree. It’s great because the parents can stand or sit down below and chat while their kiddos crawl through miles and miles of tubing above. There are many different compartments, most all with windows overlooking the room below. There are different slides throughout so that you can easily get down…only to run around like a crazy person on the squishy floor of the play area and climb the spiral stairs up again. Claire and I went there many times. Our Moms’ Club et there on occasion (more now, in colder weather, since meeting at a p...

Deck the Halls With Hopeless Holiday Photos

I stood looking at the holiday photos of my friend’s children. They were sitting still with perfect smiles. Not a single hair was out of place. Their clothes were on. I wondered how they did that. Maybe the children in the photo weren’t real.

Take THAT, Dead Husband: Decorating my House for Christmas

In some ways, Christmas is the one time of the year that I embrace my widowhood. I know that sounds a little heartless, but hear me out before you make that judgment. It has nothing to do with how much I miss my husband – that’s something I can’t even put into words. And every year, I go through the usual heartbreak that most people my situation do: I stare at the empty chair my husband used to occupy for Christmas dinner. I apologize to my dad because he is now the person forced to wrestle my tree into the stand. I grit my teeth while shopping for the electronics my kids have on their Christmas lists that I don’t understand and will never fully know how to operate.

Just when I thought we had a busy year, I had to think again compared to this busy, fun clan!

10 Fun Holiday Treats and Decorations Kids Will Love!

For years, I have wanted to go to an Ugly Sweater Party so imagine how delighted I was when I was invited to 9News’ fete. I mean, to debut my first first ugly sweater on television is quite the coming out party! The problem came when I tried to track down an ugly Christmas sweater at the local thrift store. The selection had been picked through so I opted for the most gaudy sweater I could find but tread very carefully. After all, one woman’s ugly sweater is another’s treasure. I bought some tacky ornaments to glue gun onto the sweater but crafts and textiles aren’t exactly my forté so I hesitatingly asked my husband if he thought I could pull it off. “If anyone call make an ugly sweater, it’s you, Amber.” He was joking. I think. Don’t m...

Video: Cute baby adorably confused by twins

This sweet baby boy is seeing double! Bewildered, he repeatedly looks back and forth at the twins, then at the camera as he tries to wrap his head about this perplexing situation.

Happy Thanksgiving From the Mamas!

Today’s inspirational quote: Thanksgiving comes to us out of the prehistoric dimness, universal to all ages and all faiths. At whatever straws we must grasp, there is always a time for gratitude and new beginnings. ~J. Robert Moskin Today’s not-so inspirational quote, as shared by Mile High Mama Connie via Twitter: Ordered my Fresh Free Range Thanksgiving Turkey…feel good knowing it was raised in a caring environment before it was beheaded. We’re grateful for your continued support of Mile High Mamas. Happy Thanksgiving!

Viral video: Convos with my 4-year-old “Bedtime Battles”

Bedtime battles. What parent can’t relate to them? Matthew Clarke, the dad behind “Convos with My 2-Year-Old” (which has now gone on so long that it’s been renamed to “Convos with My 4-Year-Old”) hilariously illustrates nighttime procrastinations. Only instead of a 4-minute video, our battles sometimes take hours.

What I’ve Learned about Yoga: One Mother’s Attempt to Find Her Toes

I am a late recruit to the practice of yoga.  It began as I was trying to get a handle on the whole “mind, body, spirit” thing a few months ago which, as many of you know, is no small task. And if you don’t know it, don’t start thinking about it right now because it will completely occupy your mind and you won’t finish my blog. The interesting thing about yoga is that it makes me feel old, young, out of shape, and invigorated all at the same time.  And while I don’t know if I’m completely balanced yet, I am excited that I’m finally wearing yoga pants for their intended use. But I do kind of feel like I was duped the first time I visited my local studio.  It wasn’t their fault – I just happened to get there at the wrong time. “Here’s the bathroom,” the owner pointed.  “H...

I’m Ever-Grateful to be Vexed

Every time I get a forwarded email from my dad — something about angels watching over me and how I need to squeeze my eyes shut tight, pray two Hail Marys, and make three wishes and then forward it to everyone in my address book if I don’t want to get a menacing phone call the next day — I cringe a little at the possible implications of hitting delete… or losing my friends if I don’t. And then I bow my head in gratitude because it means that not only is Dad very much alive, he’s feeling well enough to send me chain letters. Thank you for thinking of me, Dad. Every time my brother forwards me a text message joke, the kind that makes me cry with laughter but that I can’t repeat to ANYONE in ANY social setting EVER, I curse him a little. Not because o...

Thankful Things for Thanksgiving

It’s that time of year again where we all declare what we’re thankful for. And though most of us will stop along the year to reflect on things or moments, it’s this time of year that really brings the giving and goodness out in people. Unless, of course, you’re shopping during any Black Friday sales. Then, it’s every person for themselves.

Viral video: Allie the dog teaches baby to jump

Need a chuckle this Monday morning? Over the weekend, this video of Dakota the Border Collie pouncing on baby Alexis’ shadow as she hangs in her Jolly Jumper has wracked up millions of views. Seeing how it’s done, the baby then tries to copy her pet friend — and the duo are soon hopping along together.
