Warning: hilarity ahead! Jason Silva, the host of National Geographic’s Brain Games posted posted a video to facebook where he explains the miracle of an adorable baby girl’s existence. It quickly went viral, getting more than 5 million views in 24 hours. The self-described futurist and philosopher sweetly tells his wide-eyed cutie “Now you’re, like, grasping all this amazing information as you map and model the world. You’re growing, you’re learning, you’re expanding, slowly emerging as a thinking being,” says Silva. I think she totally gets it.
If you are anything like me, you spend a good chunk of your day surfing Pinterest. I’ve always considered myself to be a pretty crafty lady. I love to sew, create projects, and I love finding new recipes. Then 2012 came along, and someone told me about this magical crafting website that literally had everything you could ever imagine. It was so “cool” to be apart of Pinterest that you actually had to request an account! I will never forget that email that said “You’re in!” My day was filled with images of perfect strawberry pies and 4,000 things you can do with glitter. I was in craft heaven…I started pinning like it was my job. I even started planning a wedding that I knew wasn’t going to happen for a long time. (We all do it, and if you say...
The first day of school brought mixed emotions for many students, including 4-year-old Andrew Macias, who spoke to KTLA 5 on his way to pre-kindergarten on Tuesday. When they asked Andrew if he would miss his mother during his first day at City Terrace Elementary School, the young man firmly said, “No.” He paused a second and then began to tear up. Seconds later, Andrew’s mom gave him a hug off camera. This sweet video has gone viral almost overnight and for good reason.
This ultimate wake-up is in honor of my kids’ first day of school today, As I was setting their alarm clocks last night, they groaned. “I’d rather wake up to a dead fish slapping my face than this,” my daughter offered. If it hadn’t been so darn disgusting, I would have taken her up on it. I present to you 10-year-old Sophie. This Georgia girl’s mom has the worst time trying to get her daughter out of bed so she teamed up with a local radio station for this unique wake-up call. Though initially dazed and confused, me thinks this did the trick. What are your unique ways of waking your kids up?
Once upon a time, I wrote about orgasmic birth on my personal blog. At the time, I was only slightly pregnant and figured it was just something that would make for humorous content. But since then, I’ve been thinking about the topic more and more. Orgasmic birth: the unicorn of childbirth? I wanted to start my investigation by asking someone who has personally witnessed and attended several thousand live births: my mid-wife. The group I go to are an especially open and friendly bunch, so I knew that when I posed my question about orgasmic birth, they would be the least likely to laugh. I was right about their reaction. According to the midwife that I spoke to, she has

I asked my 2-year-old son what I should write about for Mile High Mamas. He answered, “Where’s my cup?” Sippy cups are evil. Even the ones with valves to prevent spillage are suspect. Don’t let the colorful, fanciful, engaging designs fool you. Embedded in the molded plastic lurks the spirit of spoilage. I don’t care if the cup is an old school chemical festival or BPA-free. Those babies roll and hide and fester until they nearly explode with curdy malevolence. I’ve found sippy cups under car seats. In July. Why are they forgotten/lost so easily? It starts innocently. Toddler is thirsty for milk but you are
This year, as in the years past, my family and I went to Belize for vacation. We love the country, the people, this piece of heaven. Our digs in Ambergris Caye are the magazine-perfect tropical picture. Upon arrival to paradise, as the social media whor-lly cow, I almost dropped the “W” bomb-I meant as the social media queen, I promptly posted pictures on my Facebook, with the witty comments people by now I’m sure are expecting from me. I was looking forward to pool lounging pictures, swimming with sharks and stingray pictures, impromtu, natural-looking pictures (after playing with makeup for about an hour), the whole enchilada. Well, I did all that: lounging by the pool, swimming with sharks (I mean, how cool am I at this point?) and stingrays, etc. But truth is, you ain’t seeing an...
For my daughter, it’s bright summer sunshine. For me, it’s the oncoming train of summer vacation, and the train whistle is tooting a steady stream of “I’m bored! I’m bored! I’m bored!” We’re more than a month into summer vacation and I have to listen to that whistle until the end of August. Somebody hold me, please. Fortunately, we live on a street filled with kids who’ll also be complaining of impending death from boredom, so I can always slather her with sunscreen and shoo her outside. I won’t lock the doors though, like my mother did to us. (Anybody else’s mother ever do that?) I’m already admittedly the meanest mom around, and at no other time am I meaner than summertime. But I’m not just mean to other people...
As anyone who’s gone through it will tell you, preparing for your first childbirth experience isn’t just about setting up a nursery and packing a bag. There are a few (WAY) more important items to have on hand for when the big day arrives. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. And now faith, hope, and love abide, but the greatest of these is love. What a load of crap. Love is cleaning up the chunks. Note: My daughters Lilly and Lulu contributed to this axiom in the last few weeks with their pukefest. Love is finding someone to tolerate and be tolerated by, day after day, week after week, year after year. Love is never having to say, “I’m sorry for checking out that chick (or dude).” Love is managing expectations. Love is letting your daughter use your favorite...
