Saturday-Sunday. Set sail for Sloan’s Lake for the 11th annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival. The celebration of Colorado’s Asian heritage has lots of new activities this year, including a Health and Wellness Village and the ImaginAsian collaborative art project. This year’s theme is “Gambare Japan,” a tribute to the Japanese people after the March earthquake and tsunami. The festival grounds will be decorated in origami cranes and Japanese red, and a Saturday performance of the traditional Obon dance will honor the victims of the March disaster. As always, the Chinese dragon boat races on the lake are a highlight, running throughout the fest. Don’t forget the food, too – in addition to the Taste of Asia vendor area, this year’s fest brings in a variety of food trucks. 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sa...
Great achievements in life happen one small step at a time. In the case of running your first 5K, the steps happen quite literally – one foot in front of the other…but, mental preparation is essential in achieving any goal, so putting your mind in the right place is the most important first step to finishing. (After checking with your doctor, of course.)
Through July 31. It’s Cowboy-Palooza: Cheyenne Frontier Days gets off to a rootin’-tootin’ start today. It’s hard to know where to begin–the two-week Western hoedown is jam-packed with activities every day. The concert series starts tonight with a double-whammy show by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow. Rodeo is another major highlight, as always. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association presents daily rodeos at the Frontier Days arena starting Saturday, and two rounds of Championship Bull Riding are slated for Monday and Tuesday. Outside the arena, Frontier Park is a full-on Western experience: Wild Horse Gulch feature...
Ooey gooey, messy, slimy, shapeless wet dirt. It can be quite entertaining and a whole lot of fun, but what is this stuff good for, really? Well, far more than I had realized! After visiting the Marvelous Mud, Clay Around the World exhibit at the Denver Art Museum, I have a whole new appreciation for this wonder of a natural resource.

“How’s it going?” I asked my husband over the phone. “Great,” he answered. “Unbelievable actually. The boys are riding really strong and everyone we see is so super, so supportive.” It was the fourth weekend in June and my husband and our two sons, ages 14 and 12, had just finished the first day of the 2011 Colorado MS 150, riding just shy of 75 miles on their road bikes. “Are you okay?” I asked, hearing his voice catch a little. “Yes,” he laughed. “I’m just a little choked up. Our youngest son had a hard time getting up the hill by Horsetooth Reservoir,” he explained, “and when he got to the top, these women rode up behind us and congratulated him. This happened all day long. You can’t believe ...

I call myself the “adventure mommy” and bring my kids along to all kinds of different events, venues and tastings. Most of the time, they start off doing it a bit begrudgingly as they would rather sit on the couch and watch the newest installment of Disney shows or play video games. I also try all kinds of different foods and want them to at least try something before they can say they don’t like it. My son found that he actually likes sushi and my daughter has developed quite a sophisticated pallet. But this last week was not only tasty but fun as well. We made our 4th of July potato salad out of Red, White and Blue potatoes (available at King Soopers) and tried Angelcots! Angelcots are the most delicious apricots that I have ever tried! Hurray for summer foods. ...
You know, I think Colorado is an amazing place. Even though I’m not originally from the Mile High City, Denver is home to me and probably always will be. It’s a great place to live, play, work and…most of all…raise a family. Like most major cities we have great parks, a nice zoo, a huge variety of restaurants and plenty of recreational activities. The weather is amazing, the people are friendly and now we even have a cute quarterback. But we also have something that only one other city in the country has. A NASCAR team. As a parent, it’s pretty hard to avoid a child’s love of cars at some point. It
