February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. Don’t be a “d”

This past weekend, we had house guests visiting from Wisconsin. Considering how highly contested the presidential election is here in Colorado, they expected to see lots of Obama and McCain ads. But they were struck by the number of statewide ballot issues that saw plenty of air time too.
“How are you keeping track [...]

What is your parenting style: Cheerleader or Coach?

In our younger, leaner years, Secret Agent Man was an athlete. I was a dancer. So how did we end up with uncoordinated kids?
My twin boys can’t run. You know the kids that shuffle up and down the soccer field with their feet never fully coming off [...]

The Preemptive Haircut Discussion

As we sat in swimming lessons today, the mother of a friend of Declan’s leaned over and whispered in my ear, “Did you notice Asher’s hair?” I honestly hadn’t, but on closer inspection, it appears that he and a pair of scissors had had an argument. And the scissors won. Asher recently had had a [...]

When sleeping together does not mean sleeping together and the tale of a sleep-walking mouse
October 20, 2008 – 12:00 am | No Comment

My husband and I no longer sleep together.
Now, before you go referring me to Dr. Ruth, let me clarify. I am talking about the actual sleeping part of sleeping together. With two children and the hope of adding another one to the brood sometime soon, we are doing just fine in the other category and [...]

Last month, my neighbor Monica and I took our babies hiking. She looked like she had just stepped off The Runway for Cute Activewear while I wore a scruffy pair of yoga pants.
“I bought this skort last year from my friend’s company,” she raved.
“What company?”
“BornFit! Have you ever heard of them?”
As it turns out, I [...]

Mr Lady is a Colorado native, and by native, she, of course, means that she’s lived there just long enough to be able to breathe comfortably most of the time. Her feet are solidly planted in Canada, but she left her heart in Denver and is secretly praying to come back to the place [...]

Candyland is a real place, and it starts on top of my fridge
October 16, 2008 – 12:00 am | No Comment

The chocolate in most mass-produced candy bars is as waxy and luscious as any pillar or stick at a mall candle store.
Candy corn tastes nothing like corn and it’s debatable whether it is worth bothering with calling itcandy.
Jaw breakers, lollipops, and gumballs are choking hazards.
Sweet tarts, Sprees, and Smarties are little disks [...]

Don’t Have A Cow, Man

Raffles. Anyone who’s lived in a town of less than 10,000 people knows that they are to rural communities as witch costumes are to Halloween. In other words, everywhere you look. I’ve bought raffle tickets that promised me a chance to win everything from a handmade afghan blanket to $200 worth of decoys from Cabela’s. [...]

Just like the name of her blog, The Casual Perfectionist, Momma is an admitted perfectionist, but she’s trying to be casual about it. She and her husband have a little girl named Claire, who will be 3-yrs old at the end of November. Momma is a firm believer in the fact that if [...]
