February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. “Fruit Tree 101” Brings an Orchard to Denver Schools (and 3 ways you can help)

How does a community make a positive impact on school lunch nutrition? Why, they plant a fruit orchard for the school, of course?
On August 19, The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation will visit The Urban Farm at Stapleton to help plant over 40 5-gallon fruit trees.
The trees will become part of an on-going education program that shows [...]

The Kids are Going Back to School! Moms Deserve to do a bit of Retail Therapy to Celebrate!

Sometimes I feel I get more excited about back to school items then the kids! Sure pencils, markers and folders are fun, but I found four items that will make you want to go back to school as well, mmmmmm……., just in theory. The following items are more for me than my own kiddos. Pack [...]

Give brown-bag school lunches a boost with these easy recipes

The trouble with heading back to school is that it invariably happens when it still feels like summer. And sitting inside a hot classroom on a sunny summery day can be a total downer.
While you can’t do much about the weather or school calendar, you can offer your little ones a few cool and refreshing [...]

I was a free school lunch kid (and does your family qualify?)

Ever since our son Hugo was born, my husband and I talk more about how our families lived when we were young. This month, after volunteering with Lunch Box Express with my Colorado Children’s Campaign colleagues, I shared with him my experience as a child who received free and reduced school lunch, realizing that it [...]

Is it really time to prep for school? Yes.

Where did the time go? In our school district, there’s only a scant three weeks of summer break remaining. How in the world do we break all the non-school compatible habits that have taken hold…late bedtimes, daily ice cream and frozen yogurt rations, long hours of mindless fun.

Returning to college with children is never an easy decision. As a parent, our main job is to nurture someone else’s well-being. Finding time to even take a bath alone without little ones knocking on the door is impossible. Finding the time and confidence to return to school as an adult seemed intangible.
I had, [...]

Jeffco schools to charge fees for online lunch payments

Jefferson County Public Schools swallowed nearly $500,000 in fees last year related to a program that allows parents to make online deposits to cover the cost of their kids’ lunches.
Starting this fall, the $2 billed each time money is transferred into a student’s account will be charged to their parents.
“The reality is, if we could [...]

Colorado Children’s Campaign: Creating Hope & Opportunity for All of Colorado’s Kids

Every day, lawmakers take action that affects our children. But children can’t vote, write an op-ed for their local paper or call their legislators to demand action on the issues that affect them most. So, who is working to protect their interests? Over the past 26 years, that crucial role has been played by the [...]
