Guest blogger Janalee Chmel is co-owner of “MA! motherhood with attitude” (Mile High Mamas’ pick for the most hilarious mom-oriented cards on the market) and is a Denver-based freelance writer.
My heart is pounding as I write this because it feels sort of like “coming out.”
Where to begin??? Welp, how about on January 28, 2010.

Nesting explained in 10 easy steps

1. Get pregnant and grow for 8.5 months until your tummy can sufficiently support a bowl of chili con carne with cheese and onions.
2. Eat it while semi-reclined.
3. Notice something in a corner of the ceiling. A spiderweb? Dust? Whatever it is, your appetite is suddenly gone.
4. Take the bowl into the [...]

Keep your mitts off my baby name, HBO
November 13, 2008 – 12:00 am | No Comment

My husband and I never share what we are naming our babies until after they are born.
Our theory is that nobody will criticize a baby’s name while they are holding the baby or hypnotized by the charm of a photo. Plenty of people have no qualms trashing a particular name while the baby is [...]

It is enthralling, isn’t it?
I remember as a young woman shyly asking a cousin if I could touch her very pregnant belly. I was curious what it felt like. A waterbed? A balloon? A bowl full of jelly? A wildcat in a pillow case?
I was surprised her belly felt firm, never giving much [...]

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we’d all have happy pregnancies

We told the kids about the new baby on the same day we told the rest of the world.
Some may question the wisdom of telling young children about a new sibling when there is a strong history of pregnancy loss. My tally is four. Aren’t you afraid they will be sad if the worst [...]

I Didn’t Have My Children to Make the Polar Bears Weep
July 9, 2008 – 12:32 am | No Comment

When my husband and I announced our fifth child was on the way, a friend asked if we knew what caused that.
I told him I suspected it had something to do with my practice of washing my underwear with my husband’s.
I regretted the snarky comeback immediately, but I know why I unleashed my [...]
