The Kid Blender: A Single Mom’s Attempt to Find Joy in an Unexpected Life
February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. And let me be upfront about this: I’m no clinical expert. I’m just a single mom trying to figure life out as I go. But knowing that there are around 14 million single parents out there…I’m guessing that I’m not alone in this venture.

April 18, 2009 – 12:00 am | Comments Off

As Mother’s Day draws closer, I have been sent a number of press releases for wonderful mom-oriented products. Hot Mama Designs’ jewelry line was a stand-out because it truly celebrates the essence of being a mother and a woman. I immediately fell in love with their personalized jewelry and treasure wearing my children’s names around [...]

Dear Diary, I have a daughter with whom you may be acquainted
April 9, 2009 – 12:00 am | No Comment

My oldest daughter is almost 12. She just began keeping a journal.
I had a journal from ages 14-24. It was a three-ring binder filled with hundreds of pages of notebook paper, each covered in blue or black ink scrawl and doodle-littered margins.
Ten years of angst, rants, theories, dreadful poetry, and dreams crumbled into [...]

A little visit from Reality
April 7, 2009 – 12:04 am | No Comment

“Sometimes I miss my old life,” I mutter to myself, as I am sitting at my computer, looking at my calendar, phone in hand.
All of a sudden, Reality slaps me in the face.
“Which old life?” she spats at me. “The one where you worked so hard to get into a private college, studied your [...]

Blogging: World Domination Tour
April 3, 2009 – 12:23 am | No Comment

This week, Mile High Mamas will be dedicated unto the joys of blogging. We have discussed why and how to start a blog. Now it turns personal.
I have asked our bloggers to share the reason they started blogging and their favorite post. For me, blogging was an outlet. After surviving a hellacious [...]

Lunch will be served in the machete aisle
March 26, 2009 – 12:00 am | No Comment

When I nurse in public, I am nervous.
Is someone going to glare at me? Will they abruptly steer their children in the opposite direction once it’s clear the baby hidden under the green blanket isn’t simply asleep? What if a security guard, store manager, or Citizen Busybody leaps into action, operating under the authority [...]

To spank or not to spank?
March 24, 2009 – 12:00 am | No Comment

While there were definitely some parenting philosophies on which my husband Kyle and I had to compromise, one area where we were in agreement from the start is physical punishment.
We don’t spank. We think it’s illogical to tell children not to use physical force against one another, and then use it ourselves against them.
Beyond [...]

Tough mom decisions: how did you decide?
March 23, 2009 – 12:00 am | No Comment

I never aspired to be a stay-at-home mom.
Reflecting back upon it, I never aspired to do much of anything. It was not that I was lacking in ambition. I was that annoying overachiever in athletics and academics but I just didn’t know what I wanted to do when I “grew up.” I didn’t declare Broadcast [...]

Schooltime Interrogation
March 19, 2009 – 12:00 am | No Comment

Has anyone else noticed that when kids finally go to school, they clam up? I mean, literally STOP TALKING.
“How was school today?”
“Good.”
That’s it. That’s all I get. Sorry, kid, but when you’re out of my sight for a full day, one word answers do not pass muster. This is the same kid who used to [...]

Being a Mom vs. Being a Wife
March 17, 2009 – 12:00 am | No Comment

Recently, Momversation asked 3 bloggers to tell which is harder: being a mom or being a wife.
Dooce, having experienced post-partum depression, says that marriage was much easier, and she shares many good reasons why. She votes for motherhood as the more difficult.
Finslippy says (among other things) that it’s easier to neglect marriage, making it the [...]
