The Kid Blender: A Single Mom’s Attempt to Find Joy in an Unexpected Life
February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. And let me be upfront about this: I’m no clinical expert. I’m just a single mom trying to figure life out as I go. But knowing that there are around 14 million single parents out there…I’m guessing that I’m not alone in this venture.

Family and work: how do you juggle it all?

This has been a big week for my wee company, “MA! motherhood with attitude.” We were featured in Redbook Magazine, which has 2.2 million subscribers! My biz partner, Tiffany, and I have been working the clock at both ends (me in the early mornings, her in the late evenings) to give this exposure “legs,” so [...]

When opportunity knocks and you don’t answer

In January of 2003 I took a crash course on bi-polar disorder in children.
In a weekly email, our adoption agency told us and other waiting families about a situation. Normally it doesn’t happen this way. Normally, a couple waiting to adopt eagerly awaits The Call announcing they’d been chosen to parent a newborn.
But when circumstances [...]

It’s better to be safe (and appear crazy) than sorry…

Do you believe in Instinct? Do you believe in the validity behind that funny feeling you get in your stomach when you just know something isn’t right? Do you act on it, or do you convince yourself that you’re being crazy?
It doesn’t make rational sense. It isn’t logical. You’re probably just [...]

Mom Confessions: What’s in YOUR Purse?

Guest blogger Jenna lives in Littleton with her hubby and two kids. She likes to keep things simple: love like you mean it, laugh like you are enjoying it, and live to make the most of it. She can be found blogging at Mom in Progress.
We all do it, moms. The purse clean-out. It may [...]

“Motherland”

“Motherland”
An honest and intimate look at the complexities of grief and healing, “Motherland” is about resilience, triumph of the human spirit and the power of unconditional love. It also reminds us of the vastly different ways in which disparate cultures confront deeply felt personal challenges.
Each year over eight million families around the world suffer the [...]

My daughter is embarking on the worst year of my life

Seventh grade was the worst year of my life.
It started well enough, I believe. On the first day of school, I wore my 501s and a Hunt Club shirt from JCPenney’s. My mom wouldn’t buy real polo shirts, so I had to settle for a close knock-off. I still felt good about myself. My [...]

Do I sound like a broken record?

Hardly a day goes by when I’m not explaining something to someone, and usually, that someone is a three-year old. We talk about language and words and why things are said the way they’re said. Lately, she’s been asking about why we say certain phrases, and it hit me. A lot of [...]

Your car could fit in my car

No, I don’t do daycare.
I can’t give you a lift to the airport or the ski resort, either. The tinted windows aren’t hiding well-behaved felons on their way to pick up roadside litter, nor am I a private investigator with cameras mounted to catch indiscretions and fraud.
I am simply a mom who drives [...]

Washing My Cares Away at Water World

My husband had the day off work last Friday. This should have made for a relaxing morning, but it didn’t.
Even as he made coffee and waffles and bacon, I was anxious and antsy. I had work to do, but I didn’t feel like doing it. The house was a mess, but I [...]
