The Kid Blender: A Single Mom’s Attempt to Find Joy in an Unexpected Life
February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. And let me be upfront about this: I’m no clinical expert. I’m just a single mom trying to figure life out as I go. But knowing that there are around 14 million single parents out there…I’m guessing that I’m not alone in this venture.

Bonnie Blair: Exclusive Interview with an Olympic Legend and Mom

Have you ever wondered how it would feel to stand on the medal podium at the Olympics as your national anthem is played?
What kind of life you’d have as a mother after being in the international limelight?
I recently interviewed five-time Olympic gold medalist Bonnie Blair. This speed skating legend was one of the judges who [...]

Mama Drama: Potty Power

Dear Mama Drama:
My question is about potty-training. We would like to start our daughter, who will be 3 next month, in a 3-yr-old preschool program that requires she be potty-trained. She was doing really well, then regressed to going in her diaper when the newness of the potty wore off. So, we’ve started only letting [...]

An ode to the only child

Families with many children and families with one child have a lot in common. As a mom with many, I feel a special bond with moms of only children.
I understand what it’s like to field deeply personal questions about reproductive habits, fertility, and ethical and spiritual beliefs while waiting for library story time to [...]

Mama Drama: Separation Anxiety Blues

Dear Mama Drama:
My daughter just started preschool and cries and clings to me every time I take her. This is her first experience away from me. What can I do to help her adjust?

Mama Drama: Night Terrors

Dear Mama Drama:
My 3 1/2-year-old son recently had an episode of night terrors. His older sister went through her share of them but nothing of this magnitude. About 90 minutes after he went to bed, we awoke to his screaming. He was absolutely hysterical: crying, flailing and still asleep. We tried to calm him [...]

I do it for the buttercream

“Hey, Sam!” the group of boys yelled at my son as he climbed in our van after school.
He turned, “Yeah?”
One of them asked, “Is that your mom or your daycare?”
“My mom.”
The three boys started laughing. Sam shrugged and climbed into his seat, having no idea why someone would confuse his mother for [...]

Mama Drama: Why why?

Dear Mama Drama:
My son is always asking me “why?” when I ask him to do something. I get very frustrated with his constant questioning of my authority. We often end up in arguments and power struggles because of the constant “why, why, why?”

I have friends whose children do not question them at [...]

Baby Eve

You know that feeling you get in the wee hours of Christmas Eve? You’ve spent weeks shopping, decorated every square inch of your home, made gingerbread houses with the kids, spent a few melancholy moments remembering lost loved ones, wrapping, cooking, baking, sending cards and calling old friends. Now, the moon is high and [...]

“Easy-Bake” My Butt: A Cooking Guide to Every Mother’s Worst Nightmare

It is important for me to teach my 5-year-old daughter Hadley how to cook. My mom was a top-notch chef and ran a popular restaurant for many years. Growing up, I wasn’t what you would call a gourmand.
Case in point: the infamous fiasco when I misread the gingerbread recipe and added 1 cup of ginger [...]

Velcro dependency is a national crisis

It’s with deep shame I admit a failing as a mother:
My 8 and 6-year-old sons are just now learning how to tie shoes. They hadn’t been given the opportunity to learn this life skill until recently.
We went shoe shopping. They immediately gravitated toward the usual vinyl superheroes splayed on the sides. Superheroes on shoes [...]
