Like the images on its site, the clever definitions and analogies by Pinterest users are endless: “Pinterest is like getting a new magazine in the mail every day.” “Pinterest is everything you never knew you always wanted to know about anything.” “It’s like Etsy and Pottery Barn had a baby and made a scrapbook of their cute little family.”

The latest social-media craze is a virtual pin board, or scrapbook, to collect and organize your favorite images and ideas from around the Web. While the site has something for everyone, it’s dominated by home decor, fashion, food and crafts, and has become the new Internet darling — make that obsession — among women in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

“Pinterest is like fantasy ootball for girls,” said Jeannette Appold of Rosemount, Minn. The 44-year-old attorney and mother of two says the social bookmarking site has added value to her life by bringing out creativity that she never knew existed. “Michael’s (craft store) has gotten so much of my money lately,” she said of her newfound passion to imitate craft projects she’s found on the site.

Pinterest has been around since March 2010, but its popularity has recently exploded, making it one of the 10 most popular social-networking sites. The site grew to nearly 5 million users in November, from just 418,000 in May, according to metrics firm ComScore.

Here’s how it works: When you see an image that you want to “pin” to your “board,” you can capture it using a “pin it” plug-in and add it to your online profile. Everyone who follows you can view your pinboards, comment on them and add to them if they have permission. They can “re-pin” the images to their own boards and you can do the same with what you see and like on their boards. Clicking on the image usually takes users to the original source, so a pin of, say, chicken curry, should take you to the website or blog that provides the recipe.

Make sense? The best way to deeply understand how Pinterest works is to join the site and start pinning.

Many users are crediting Pinterest for adding inspiration and creativity to their lives in new and challenging ways. Appold has 17 different boards organized by books she wants to read, recipes she’s inspired to try and clothes she dreams of owning, to name a few. She also has a board of Pinterest-inspired things that she’s actually made: gifts for her children’s teachers, a prayer pot and chore chart for her kids and a Thanksgiving centerpiece. Appold also uses the site to organize ideas she has for her basement remodeling and a bridal shower she’s planning.

Other Pinterest users like the site for its abundance of practical ideas. Did you know you can use an empty egg carton to organize your junk drawer? How about using toilet paper rolls to store those pesky electronic cables? Such ingenious solutions leave Pinterest users asking — “Why didn’t I think of that?” — and keep them coming back for more.

“An addiction” is the best way for University of Minnesota student Courtney Reigh to describe her Pinterest use. The 21-year-old prefers “pinning” over Facebook and logs into her account five to 10 times a day, spending 10 to 25 minutes each visit scrolling for images of home decoration ideas, recipes and clothes. She’s expanded her style and wardrobe, and learned to make the “perfect poached egg, all to the credit of Pinterest.”

“I can get lost in that site,” she said. “I check it first thing in the morning, right before I go to bed and everywhere in between.”

Some Pinterest users are just getting the hang of it, but are devoted fans nonetheless. As the director of social media for Bentz Whaley Flessner, an Edina, Minn.-based fundraising consulting firm, Justin Ware is well-versed in all aspects of social media. He first became interested in Pinterest as a tool for nonprofit organizations, but he quickly began using it personally, too.

The 32-year-old Minneapolis man has started looking for vegetarian recipes and pinning them to his “good eatin’ ” board. He also has boards to house pictures of dogs, camping gear and photos of his favorite places.

But in the Pinterest world, Ware is an anomaly. Guys haven’t jumped on the Pinterest wagon the way women have. About 70 percent of Pinterest users are female and according to Experian Hitwise, most are 25 to 44 years old.

Not only are most Pinterest users female, but most of them live in the Midwest, where the site first caught on.

Midwesterners are up to 102 percent more likely to visit Pinterest.com than the average U.S. Internet user, according to ComScore.

Spreading the love has never been so much fun! Whether you decide to go traditional or get creative, this holiday of charming affection offers up an opportune time to tell those around you how much you care.

A Valentine mustn’t be elaborate or pricey to win the hearts of those you love…but it does need to shout I LOVE YOU! With the many types of love out there, you’ll want to be sure to put some thought into the type of Valentine you choose…below are a few of my favorite ideas.

A Valentine For Your…

Husband:

Pinup Photo by Iman Woods

He’ll treasure an amazing photo of his one true love and a gift like this will likely find its way through generations to come. Iman does fabulous work and the experience is half the fun (a little gift for you too). Your great-grandchildren aren’t going to believe that’s a picture of grandma, lol.

Wife:

Jewelry by Kris Nations

You really can’t go wrong with a classic gift of bling. Make her favorite meal (or order in) because restaurants are b.u.s.y. on Valentines Day. Find a creative way to surprise her with the gift! This jewelry is made in the USA from recycled metals by two creative sisters.

Co-workers:
Heart-Shape Paper Clips

Let ‘em know you care with a little bend and clip. Use this thoughtful idea to attach a Happy Valentines Day note to mundane paperwork and help brighten someone’s day.

Teachers/Childcare Workers:

Quilled Valentine

Write a little message of appreciation on a strip of festive paper, crease it in the center and roll the edges to form the perfect valentine…or go the extra mile and design an entire card!

Family & Friends:

Creative Photo Cards

A photo card with a sweet twist is a perfect gift for family and friends. 3-D fun is perfect if you’re handing them out, but if you’re mailing your Valentines, you’ll want to go with a flat…Tip: add lip stickers to the MUAH card. We don’t have regular lip trays at our house…but we DO have vampire fangs from Halloween…I’m thinking we might have a little Twilight inspired fun – it’ll make the grandparents wonder, ha.

MUAH

Last weekend I was invited to the SIA(Ski Industry Association) show at the Denver Convention Center. I am always a little giddy over the idea of getting to see great new products and telling you about them – but this time, I was invited to speak with Picabo Street! Yes, the iconic, amazing three-time Olympic Skier that even Lindsey Vonn looks up to.

What I was excited to learn is that like us, she is a mom. She has four–count them–F-O-U-R boys! The lady is busy! But, she took the time to talk to me about a couple really cool new products from LaunchPad, called Hookease and Wedgease.

I asked her about the product she’s endorsing, Hookease. She said, “I want to literally scream if from the top of the building, put it on YouTube. This product is so revolutionary. It is a simple concept that allows a skier to learn the fundamentals and good mechanics of skiing without being against their parent’s body stabilizing them (which Street claims is “just idiotic”).

The plastic part connects to the back of the ski (it is simple and easy to use – even with your gloves on) and the rigid connection allows you to control whoever you are teaching to ski the correct way to turn so you are “not just sliding down the slope.” Street said, “it’s like a magic wand” when you want them to turn you just flip your wrist. “Hookease does not age discriminate,” Street emphasized. It can be used to teach kids or adults. So ladies, go ahead and teach your boyfriend how to ski!

When kids first learn to ski they learn to “pizza” and “french-fry” – these are just terms that kids can identify with in terms of what their skis are doing. When their skis are parallel to one another, they are “french-fry” and when they make a wedge it is “pizza.” Simple enough. Now there is a new product that will help the kids learn how to pizza a little easier and not cross the tips that is Wedgease. Wedgease is the perfect product to teach beginners because of it’s hard elastic band and easy clamp system.

I asked her if she thought with this kind of start, her kids would be able to “ski circles around her.” (As if that is even possible!) She laughed a little…and told me about how competitive (and non-competitive) some of her kids are. But she did tell me that she will be getting her 15-month-old out on the slopes. With Street as your mom and Hookease as your start….anyone want to take bets on another Olympic Skier in the family?

Fancy Tiger Crafts has been a go-to destination in the Baker neighborhood for clever crafters for the past five years. Its spin-off, Fancy Tiger Clothing, draws a young boutique crowd for men’s and women’s apparel and accessories. Now proprietors of those businesses have moved, chess-like, around the block, and were joined by veteran retailer Buffalo Exchange to give shoppers yet another reason to spend some time browsing on Broadway.

The three recently opened their separate shops under the same roof in a former mercantile space at 51-59 Broadway.

At Fancy Tiger Crafts, owners Jaime Jennings and Amber Corcoran have created an open, airy shop featuring shelves bursting with yarn from more than 30 vendors. Many of the vendors are small, local companies like Lonesome Stone of Granby. Bolts of colorful printed cloth line shelves along one wall, while a rack of Liberty of London prints sits front and center. Bookshelves brim with guides to knitting, crocheting and other needle arts, and an upholstered chair gives customers a place to peruse the works. Old-fashioned lettering painted on the wall advertises “Handsomely Decorated Cloth Fabrics.” In the back of the store is a long community table where people can gather on open crafting nights and for classes on making everything from baby quilts to Japanese coin purses. A fireplace and cheerful yellow- print wallpaper lend a homey feel. “We wanted it to be like an old prairie schoolhouse,” Jennings said.

And in two rooms farther back, the real magic happens: 15 sewing machines and several cutting tables are available during classes and for rent by the hour.

Next door, Jennings’ partner Matthew Brown runs Fancy Tiger Clothing. The store has a contemporary yet rustic feel, with plenty of hand-hewed wood furnishings by Fin Art and barn- wood-paneled dressing rooms.

Brown carries a number of lines for men, including Top Man, Kill City jeans and Billykirk Bags. Among the women’s clothing lines

Read more: Like-minded fiber and clothing merchants team up in Baker neighborhood’s “anti-mall” retail area – represented are Tulle, and such local designers as Melissa May and Fallene Wells. Many of his jewelry offerings are created by local designers, and Brown also likes finding select vintage bags and jewelry to resell. “Our goal is to try to buy local and repurposed as much as we can, and to educate people on what we’re doing,” Brown says.

Buffalo Exchange has been doing a brisk business since it opened early this month on Broadway, according to owner Todd Colletti. It buys, sells and trades clothing at the store. Men’s is up front, while women’s clothing and accessories are at the back of the store. Free parking alongside the building is a nice perk (but mind the signs and don’t park in the urgent-care spaces across the lot). After more than a dozen years at 226 E. 13th Ave. (which remains in business, selling clothes) Colletti says he’s happy to be near like-minded merchants.

“I love Broadway. It has a long Denver tradition and was once called the ‘Miracle Mile,’ ” Colletti says. “With all that drive-by and walk-by traffic, we’re a lot busier. And because we bought the space, we were able to do things with it. We have more light, garage doors we can open up, evaporative cooling, storage for back stock, a kicthen and space for employees for functions.”

A former Woolworth’s and J.C. Penney location, the building has features that work for retail, including shelving and a conveyor belt.

“I’ve always dreamt of doing an anti-mall and now we have it,” Colletti says.

Tigalo time

What do you get when you cross a tiger and a buffalo?

A Tigalo, of course, which is the amusing moniker created by the trio of merchants who have joined forces at 51-59 Broadway. The name calls to mind the quirky movie “Napoleon Dynamite,” whose title character draws a “liger” and says: “It’s pretty much my favorite animal. It’s like a lion and a tiger mixed … bred for its skills in magic.” Tigalo Block Party grand opening celebration, 7-10 p.m. Feb. 3.

When a powerful blizzard ripped through North Dakota last winter, hundreds of drivers were stranded as white-out conditions shuttered interstates spanning the state. Snow whipped up by wind marred the lines between pavement and grassy drop-offs, leaving some scared motorists unsure what to do.

Two local software developers figured they could help.

Bob Bertsch, an employee with the North Dakota State University Extension Service, and Jake Joraanstad, an NDSU computer engineering major, had just finished developing an app to help residents during floods when the blizzard hit in March, convincing them to shift their attention to winter disasters.

Winter Survival Kit was born. The free program, available for iPhones and Android smartphones, is both a primer to help motorists prepare for winter driving and a beacon when things go badly.

It can pinpoint a motorist’s location, call 911, notify friends and family, and monitor how long the gas will hold out. The app also gives potentially life-saving alerts when users tap a big red button on its simple home screen that reads, “I’m Stranded!” Among the advice: stay with your vehicle and keep the tailpipe clear of snow, since a backup can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

“It’s our sincere hope that no one ever has to use it,” said Bertsch, an NDSU Extension Service web technology specialist who led the team that developed the app. “But if one person does have to use it and it keeps them in their car or keeps them from succumbing to carbon monoxide poisoning, then it is definitely worth the time and effort that was spent on the app.”

The app also helps drivers prepare for bad weather by inputting phone and policy numbers for insurance and roadside assistance, and designated emergency contacts. And it gives guidance on putting together a physical survival kit to keep in vehicles in case of emergencies.

“Any tools developed which arm people with information that will help keep them safe is of value,” North Dakota Emergency Services spokeswoman Cecily Fong said.

The app does have limitations. Joraanstad said some especially rural areas of the country — particularly in the Great Plains — have shoddy cellphone coverage that could impede some features such as GPS. At that point the app would tell users that their location couldn’t be pinpointed and instruct them to call 911.

Still, the app has emergency numbers handy, allowing users to send text messages for help. Text messages often can be sent by weaker signals than are needed for clear phone calls. And the app would give emergency advice on braving the elements — even telling users how to use parts of a vehicle to keep warm.

The Midwest hasn’t seen much heavy snowfall in the last few months, so the app’s developers haven’t heard of any success — or horror — stories yet. But they’re convinced that when the time comes, their app will help.

“This app can literally save someone’s life. We take great pride in that,” said Joraanstad, the 22-year-old chief operating officer for Myriad Devices, a startup company in NDSU’s research and technology park that produced the app.

Bertsch, Joraanstad and two colleagues who teach at NDSU have become experts in disaster apps. Last year they developed a program to help residents deal with flooding that has overwhelmed North Dakota in the last few years. The H2O app provides news feeds, river levels, road closure maps and other information.

Winter Survival Kit, which works in the U.S. and Canada, joins several apps from other developers that were designed to help smartphone users in a bind, such as Help I Crashed My Car, Emergency Radio, iMapWeather Radio, iTriage, Close Call and pMonitor. As of this week, there didn’t appear to be other winter survival-specific apps in either iTunes’ or Android’s app stores.

“I think we hit a particular niche,” Bertsch said.

About 12,000 people downloaded the app in the first week it was released, and Joraanstad said that at last check, there were another 3,000 downloads. The early returns have been mostly favorable. Out of 16 user reviews on the Android website, 13 gave 5-star ratings. “Practical … yet simple,” reads one review. It had a 4-plus average rating among Apple iPhone users.

People posting lower ratings reported trouble with the app crashing. Joraanstad said those glitches are being addressed as they arise with updates.

The app is being promoted by Texas, where it can be downloaded directly from the Texas Extension Disaster Education Network website. In an unusual climate swap, Texas saw snow this winter before much of the rest of the country.

“With the amount of snow and ice during winter in the Panhandle and North Texas, plus the possibility of unusual cold weather occurrences elsewhere in the state, we felt it would be helpful to many Texans to make this app accessible,” said Joyce Cavanagh, Texas extension service spokeswoman.

“People here aren’t used to driving in that kind of weather. It gives some peace of mind while traveling,” she said.

Cavanagh also said she felt more at ease knowing that many students traveling for the holidays had downloaded the app before hitting the roads.

College student Jessica Rush said she could have used such an app in March. The 21-year-old and a friend were traveling in separate cars in North Dakota when the fast-moving storm left her so blinded that she was on the highway’s left shoulder when she thought she was driving over the warning bumps on the right. She figured she was about a half-mile from her friend’s car.

“I called my dad and told him I was going to get out and walk to her car and he said, ‘Do not leave your car. You don’t know where she is,’” recalled Rush, who had cellphone coverage where she was stuck.

Rush stayed in her 2000 Oldsmobile Alero for four nerve-racking hours until she was rescued by a truck driver, and she came away with a new appreciation for the dangers of winter driving.

“When your parents tell you not to go somewhere you should probably listen,” Rush said. “I guess this app is the next best thing.”

I am officially in the market for a new vehicle.

Actually, I didn’t even know I was looking until I was asked by Nissan to be a part of their #HolidayQuest campaign to test-drive their 2012 Nissan Quest. As my kids eagerly explored the minivan and I inhaled that glorious new-car smell while fiddling with the iPod connectivity, I knew it was out with the old (my 2003 Honda Pilot) and onto the new (vehicle TBD).

I was originally supposed to test-drive the Quest over the winter break and we planned a road-trip to Utah. But when a house fire caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage to my parent’s home in Canada (including destroying their vehicles), we postponed our test-drive until early-January. As a side note, Quest had offered a $500 gift card to a charity of my choice and they generously donated that to my parents to help recover essential items until their home owner’s insurance kicked in.

The first thing I noticed about the Quest is the technology (something my older vehicle is acutely lacking).

Pros:

Nissan Intelligent Key and Push Button Ignition–This admittedly took some getting used but in the end, I loved being able to unlock the doors, open the liftgate and start the engine without taking the key out of my purse. Tip: This can make you lazy. Remember to put the car in park BEFORE turning off the ignition, otherwise you will have a heart attack as your car starts going backwards on the hill.

Blind Spot Warning System– An indicator appears on the outside mirror when another vehicle is in your blind spot. Put your turn signal on and a warning chime alerts you.

RearView Monitor—For those of us who’ve ever backed into anything: This nifty screen lets you see what’s behind you when backing up.

One-touch power sliding doors–I think these should be a must for every mom who has her hands full.

The 7-seat Quest has killer storage space. Not only does the second row fold flat but so does the third. But unlike other minivans, instead of stowing seats, the cargo well behind the third row is a permanent place to put whatever you like.

Great control panel that includes the Nissan Navigation System, iPod connectivity, Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System and more.

LATCH–I can’t review a minivan without talking about the carseat situation. The LATCH system lets you easily secure LATCH-compatible child restraints in the second and third row without using a seat belt or a locking clip.

Cons:

The Quest has some very cool amenities but it didn’t go the extra mile with mind-blowing features. It was just a good, basic vehicle.

Quest is available in front-wheel drive only. This was tough for someone coming from an SUV.

The Exterior–I’m not a fan of the look of minivans. Quest overhauled it into a more boxy, less minivan-ish look, which I neither disliked or loved.

Overall, we enjoyed the Quest and went on a few of our favorite local adventures, including hiking up North Table Mountain and skating at Evergreen Lake. Thanks to Quest for inviting me to be part of this campaign.

What do you look for when you buy a new vehicle?

Whether you’re hitting the slopes this winter or building snowmen in your backyard, you are going to want to bundle up – and with these top winter gear picks, your kids will be properly protected AND in great style!

Obermeyer - Clothes That Grow!

(photo: Sheer Bliss Coat in Anthracite)

Obermeyer’s novel “I-Grow” System allows for your children’s winter wardrobe to grow right along with them. It is one of the most brilliant l ideas I have come across in my search for epic winter wear. Simply snip the colored thread at the wrists and ankles to extend the length up to two inches, allowing for an extra season (or two!). High waters will be a thing of the past with this original design. Another ingenious devise by Obermeyer – the “goodie pocket,” perfect for a healthy snack when you are too busy having fun to take a break…a favorite pick at our house: organic Wacky Apple fruit leather.

Alpha Industries - Built to Last!
(photo: Mini McGyver Jacket)

From prim and proper to rugged yet refined, this military inspired casual wear will make a fashionable statement this winter. With quality materials and ultra- sturdy assembly (even the buttons are anchored on for a lifetime of wear,) these garments are ideal for little outdoor enthusiasts. Matching parent/child styles are absolutely adorable and perfect for a mild weather day on the slopes or an après ski hot cocoa and s’mores.

Gordini - Gear Done Right.

Frosty fingers and foggy goggles can quickly ruin a day on the slopes and choosing sunglasses over ski goggles can result in sunburned eyeballs (not fun) due to the glare reflecting from the ground up. Gearing your children up right will not only protect them from the elements but will ensure a great experience for the entire family. Gordini technology takes winter gear technology seriously – effectively balancing the body’s natural heat production with the loss experienced in cold temperatures. Quality ski gear is important…even for our tiny learners. Don’t risk spending your winter vacation juggling uncomfortable hand warmers and making frequent defrost stops at the lodge.

Origin Snow - Small Business, Big Impact!

This local, family owned company specializes in kid-sized snowboards and equipment. With fresh designs, free demos and a respectful vision for the moral of the sport, this young company is pioneering a new generation of little shredders. Start skill building early and avoid the pain of adult learning – I think I’m still recovering from a Winter Park boarding lesson last season…I’ll stick with skis for a while.

Name Bubbles - Names That Stick…To Your Gear!

After carefully selecting your winter gear, you will want to protect it from the ominous lost and found…and help your children recognize their valuable belongings in the heaps of skis, boards, helmets, coats and other items at the lodge. These fashionable stickers are not only visually appealing, they are amazingly durable – laundry and dishwasher safe – read about by inadvertent home test on this product: Honey, I Shrunk the Sippy Cup.

Payton was one of several preschoolers at the Goddard School in Thornton who recently made their voices heard about which games they like the best. Those games are now in store shelves around the country after earning a place on the “Top 10 Preschooler-Approved Toys for 2011″ list.

In all, 20 Goddard schools nationally tested more than 100 toys and games submitted by major toy companies. The toys were placed in classrooms of mostly preschoolers for their consideration.

A school being picked as a toy-testing ground is an honor, as there are more than 300 Goddard School franchises, said PJ Sautter, co-owner of the Thornton branch.

Schools were selected according to test performance and other evaluations. The Thornton branch was the only Colorado school chosen, Sautter said.

The toys were placed in classrooms for a week. The ones chosen were those that were interactive and quickly attracted the eyes and imaginations of the children, school co-director Amanda Naylor said.

“They were toys that also allowed teachers to ask open-ended questions,” said Taylor. “We also wanted to see if the toys were something the children chose to go back to.”

It also helped if the toys encouraged social skills and cooperation, she said. In addition, the toys needed to be appropriate for infants through age 6.

A game that didn’t make the cut was a bead-lacing activity, Taylor said. “You laced about four beads, the project was over.”

Teacher Gabi Rusch said Payton was mixing her fun with learning, as she tried to match up colors to collect enough owls to win the game.

========

The top 10

The kids voted after a week of playing with the toys, and the results from 20 schools were submitted to Goddard officials. The top 10 toys — and the toy company: • Animal Sounds Hay Ride (Learning Curve)

• Bristle Block Stackadoos (B. Toys by Battat)

• Citiblocs Camouflage 100 Piece Set (CitiBlocs)

• Citiblocs Little Builders Rattle Blocs (CitiBlocs)

• Count Your Chickens! board game (Peaceable Kingdom)

• Elemenosqueeze (B. Toys by Battat)

• Hoot Owl Hoot! board game (Peaceable Kingdom)

• Little Shopper Playset (Earlyears)

• Sassy Sensor Ball Set (Sassy)

• Soft Chime Garden (Lamaze)

In just a few short days Christmas Day will be here. If you’re like me, you often procrastinate when it comes to finishing gift shopping (I still has quite a few to get). Buying late doesn’t mean you have to skimp on generosity! If you’re looking for a killer gift for a loved one, we’ve got ideas for you!

The folks Retrevo recently shared their “top tech picks of the year.” I carefully studied the list and have to say that I wholeheartedly agree with their selections. Let’s take a peak at some really amazing last-minute gift options.

Not only does each offer a good camera, but network speed, functionality, battery life and display are also top-of-the-line.

So, you may ask, what is a DSLR? DSLRs are the highest end cameras. They provide a multitude of sensors, and an almost endless supply of options and customization. They are heavy (you won’t want to carry these in your purse) and their price point isn’t cheap. I personally own a Canon T1i and am in love with it. Lenses are also costly, but if you are gung-ho about getting great pictures, these are THE DSLRs you should consider. With 12-18MP these three cameras are easy to use and come with an assortment of features for editing photos. Most of these also come with the ability to record HD video.

I highly recommend 1080p – basically it means the resolution is much better. Also, getting a tv with an HDMI port is also important as this allows for the maximum quality presentation possible on the set. Many of the premier HDTV brands have the native ability to join your home network (a nice plus when wanting to view content from your computer on the big screen). Also, though 3D tvs haven’t taken off quite yet (mostly due to the price point and the specialized glasses required) it’s worth at least thinking about getting one that is 3D capable.

Mile High Mamas is taking part in a fun campaign with Nissan over the holidays. On Tuesday, December 20th at 7 p.m. MST, the car company will be holding a #HolidayQuest Twitter party to discus how several parents around the country are navigating the holiday season with a new Nissan Quest vehicle! They will share tips and tricks from surviving the holiday season with their family while giving back to their community and they want to hear your ideas.

And here’s your motivation for taking part. By telling us how you would use a portion of your gift card towards your community and participating in their holiday discussions, you will be entered to win one of five $1,000 gift cards!

Go here to RSVP.

Note: Nissan provided a loan of the Nissan Quest and a contribution to a charity of my choice in my community.
