The Kid Blender: A Single Mom’s Attempt to Find Joy in an Unexpected Life
February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. And let me be upfront about this: I’m no clinical expert. I’m just a single mom trying to figure life out as I go. But knowing that there are around 14 million single parents out there…I’m guessing that I’m not alone in this venture.

Life Skills: Home Ec in the New Millennium. How many chores do your kids have?

When I was a kid, Thursday was cleaning day. Every Thursday the entire house was cleaned from top to bottom. I can’t remember at what age I began doing chores but I remember doing chores as far back as I can remember. These days, it seems that fewer children are doing chores. Is this media [...]

Volunteering as School Work

Back in November, Mile High Mamas, teamed up with the Colorado branch of Volunteers of America and posted a list of volunteer opportunities available around Denver for families during the holidays. It was just what I needed.
I called VOA and signed us up for a Meals On Wheels Route. One child was eager to help, [...]

Oh! Library, How I’m In Love With Thee!

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach. ~ Elizabeth Barrett Browning
The smell of aged paper and dust, the stacks of books, the quite atmosphere that tells me people are learning things! Oh, the library! A sweet resource of all things.

Resistance to Homework is Futile

Resistance to schoolwork is futile. You will be assimilated into the schoolwork collective.
Public school or homeschool, there’s bound to be resistance to schoolwork at some point, or multiple points. How do you handle the complaints, the dislike, the utter resistance that kids throw our way?

Homeschooling Gratitude for a Happy Thanksgiving!

It’s Thanksgiving! Or if you share the idiom of my children, it’s Turkey Day. They call it like they see it and state their goals clearly. Time to give thanks for the bounty that is my peculiar life and appreciate that what I plan usually comes to fruition in dynamic color taking unexpected shape and [...]

When Homeschooling Doesn’t Go The Way I Planned

The first three years of homeschooling was easy, I’ve got to admit, compared to today but, not without hurdles. Kindergarten is all about discovering the world and really jumping into the basic skills. Reading and writing become a reality that open doors of understanding and, opened my eyes. What happens if my son is not meeting [...]

Don’t understand kids’ homework? Don’t miss these Homeschool and Public School Resources!

HELP! I don’t understand 6th grade math!
Confession: I’m a college graduate, I’ve worked at an investment company in a high rise and wore a suit, I’ve worked from home having started my own business, I’ve run a retail store and I still get stuck on math.
Honestly, I have forgotten, well maybe misplaced, many if the [...]

Homeschooling: Why am I doing this?

My children have been homeschooled since day one of their education. My son is 11 and in 6th grade, my daughter is 7 and in 2nd grade. We sit at the dining table, crack open books and rev up the pencils. Reading happens, discussions get going, we get our hands dirty with experiments, and we [...]

Oversight yet to catch up with Colorado’s burgeoning online schools

In the beginning, there was Monte Vista On-Line Academy. Its state-assigned “pilot project” status signaled its daring, and its 13 students, wired up and logged on, were spared hours of bumping along rugged San Luis Valley roads to and from brick-and-mortar schools.
Now, no longer provisional or experimental, and championed by a strange-bedfellows mix of parents, [...]
