The Kid Blender: A Single Mom’s Attempt to Find Joy in an Unexpected Life
February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. And let me be upfront about this: I’m no clinical expert. I’m just a single mom trying to figure life out as I go. But knowing that there are around 14 million single parents out there…I’m guessing that I’m not alone in this venture.

Thanksgiving 2010 Events and Volunteer Round-up

THANKSGIVING EVENTS
Thanksgiving Day Nov. 25
The Loveland Turkey Trot 2010 starts at 8:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. It starts on Hoffman Drive, just north of the Mckee Medical Center (2000 Boise Driver), then goes through the neighborhood to Boyd Lake Road, and on to the bike path at Boyd Lake. The bike path ends at 18th [...]

The Scrooge of Thanksgivings Past

A couple of weeks ago, I casually posted the following status update on Facebook:
Gotta admit I’m just not feeling the Thanksgiving love because we won’t have family here (and cooking a huge dinner for just us doesn’t appeal). Can a person still feel gratitude and order pizza?
I was 1) burned at the stake 2) invited [...]

Before the Holidaze Begin, the Holiday Letter is Done!

It’s really not my fault, even though it does seem hypocritical of me. I mean, how can someone who grumbles about the “Happy Hallow-thanks-ismas” season that morphs and spreads through all the retail stores as soon as they take down the Back To School signs be done with her Holiday Letters?  (Photo credit: The [...]

Black Friday, indeed

Black Friday, indeed

When we met between the racks of better women’s sportswear, I knew I was in for an emotional ride. Her hand, when I shook it, was stiff and cold, wooden almost. I couldn’t discern the material. Perhaps some sort of polyresinous material. Born in a factory, but not without feelings, her body may have been [...]

Rescue Mission sounds alarm on slow turkey donations

By this time last year, the Denver Rescue Mission already had secured more than 4,000 turkeys toward its 6,000-turkey goal in preparation for Thanksgiving.
This year, 12 days into the annual turkey drive, only 212 have been donated. It’s not unusual for turkey donations to lag and the mission to sound the alarm, but this year [...]

Sweet Tomatoes Offers Mile High Mamas a 25% Catering Discount (just $6.75 per person!)

Souplantation & Sweet Tomatoes’ Chicken Won Ton Happiness Salad makes me happy.
That’s why taking the restaurant up on their 25% off discount for catering was a no-brainer. My neighbor Kristen (already a mother of three kids and two stepchildren) is pregnant with twins. Unexpectedly. If that doesn’t deserve an all-out celebration, I don’t know what [...]

Make Bubbling, Spooky Halloween Cauldrons with Dry Ice

Welcome to another Spangler Science Saturday. I have never been much of a Halloween fan, but after working with Steve Spangler for more than five years, Halloween has become one of my favorite holidays. I had no idea you could have so much fun with dry ice and warm water. If you are planning a [...]

The scariest thing about Halloween decorations is that they exist at all

‘Tis the season when decapitated mummies and axe-wielding ghouls haunt the aisles of grocery stores and the lawns of our neighbors.
It’s ugly out there.
My kids like to visit the Halloween slivers of stores, where orange and black reign supreme and candy buckets have moving claws. Rows of plastic skeletons hang limply from hooks, fugitives from [...]

Denver Zombie Crawl 2010 – Yes! A *Family* Event!

OK. Maybe not for *every* family. But there sure were *a lot* of families there this year.
If you have never even *heard* of the Denver Zombie Crawl, let me enlighten you.
Started 5 years ago by Denver native Danny Newman, the event has grown exponentially every year until this year’s event, held last Saturday in Skyline [...]
