Guest blogger from Aurora Laura Neiman, a.k.a. LaLaGirl, was recently featured in a national nonprofit’s year-end fundraising video. This is her heartwarming story about the experience for her family and overcoming her anxiety of the unknown.

Why Pinterest.com may be the most addictive site ever (and why you should sign up)

Despite the fact I’m familiar with many of the cutting-edge social media technologies, I am often hesitant to adopt them because I’m already too busy with blogging, Twitter, Facebook and my iPhone.
However, my latest obsession Pinterest.com has surpassed them all.
And believe me, that’s really saying something.
I’ve gone from being a bored cook to being [...]

When No. 2 Isn’t a Good Thing: Time for Parents to Speak Up for Vaccinations

Guest Post by Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition
As Coloradans, we often boast about residing in America’s leanest state, enjoying 300 days of sunshine and being one of the most educated states in the country. But a new Associated Press report issued last week puts Colorado at the top of another list – No. 2 for vaccine [...]

Colorado ranks No. 2 in parents declining to vaccinate kids

A new survey puts Colorado second-highest for parents refusing vaccines for their kids, a trend that increasingly troubles state health officials.
Vaccine advocates in Colorado said the Associated Press tally of vaccine refusals reflects an abysmal state rate for preventive shots. They said Colorado’s education system makes it too easy to opt out of shots, and [...]

Wounded kids learn how to navigate world at Mount St. Vincent Home

By the time a child gets to Mount St. Vincent Home, he or she has been abused, neglected or witnessed abuse. Some have mental illness, and some have been in several living situations.
Some arrive with only a plastic bag, filled with a few clothes and maybe a favorite toy. They are scared and afraid they [...]

Be the mosquito! (Or, how to take action on issues you care about)

“If you think you’re too small to have an impact, try going to sleep with a mosquito.” Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop
I believe strongly in the ability of ordinary people to have a profound impact on their community. Not only is that my job as community groups coordinator at the Colorado Children’s Campaign, [...]

Miracle mom thankful to be alive to hold new baby

No one, neither patient nor doctor, wants to learn firsthand what “exsanguination” means.
But Dianna Cillessen is thankful she stuck around long enough to hear the definition.
It means that when surgeons cut into her skin on a September day when she was as good as dead, no blood came out. There was none left.
The Arvada mom [...]

Why pizza is not a proper school lunch vegetable

Just when you thought Congress couldn’t get any wackier, our esteemed elected officials have proposed school lunch guidelines that count French fries and the tomato paste atop slices of greasy pizza as vegetables.
To combat childhood obesity, the USDA had proposed setting limits on the number of fried potato servings children could eat in a [...]

Make the holidays lighter with these Thanksgiving events to get you moving

They say we are entering the season of temptation, weight gain and stress. But what if we turn that notion upside down and declare the upcoming feast week the start of something new? What better time to swear off sweets than before the holiday cookie exchanges begin?
If that just sounds like crazy talk, how about [...]
