In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. Get Your Car Seats Inspected During National Child Passenger Safety Week (Sept. 19-25)

When I was pregnant with my first child, one statistic resonated with me: the majority of car seats are installed incorrectly. For that reason, I always had them installed by a fire fighter who was certified to do so.
The view wasn’t too bad, either.
According to a survey of more than 900 parents who [...]

Kicking Off Another Attempt at Soccer

On Saturday, community soccer kicked off and for the first time, both my kids played.
My husband Jamie and I enrolled 6-year-old Hadley a couple of years ago but she went on a two-year sabbatical after a disappointing season of general apathy and lack of killer instinct.
In her defense, her team name was the Butterflies. Not [...]

Healthier school meals pound out new message in Colorado

School districts across the country are adding healthier food in their lunchrooms, but one of the nation’s leaders in the trend is finding it’s a tough campaign to sustain if kids don’t eat the food.
Boulder Valley Schools in 2009 overhauled its food-services program to make it healthier fare, adding salad bars in every school, preparing [...]

SpaFinder Deal Days Bring Great Discounts for Mom

FREE seminars on sleep challenges, potty training, toddlers & teens at Children’s Hospital

A few years ago, we were in the throes (or rather, woes) of potty training our stubborn 3-year-old daughter. Our pediatrician recommended we attend a FREE toilet training seminar at The Children’s Hospital and I have been an advocate of this program ever since.
Let’s face it: there is a lot to parenting and tapping into [...]

Normal is a setting on your dryer: A dad’s cancer, a mom’s new role & the new normal

What is “normal” and why do we always seem to be looking for it? It makes sense that some would seek predictability once they start a family, but is “normalcy” really something we can attain?
“I can’t wait to have a normal life,” is exactly what I was thinking three years ago in St. Louis, when [...]

Children’s illness stirs Colorado debate on raw milk

At first, Mary Pierce thought her 2-year-old couldn’t stop throwing up because she had a typical stomach bug. A few days later, she watched in terror as the lethargic little girl was rushed by helicopter to The Children’s Hospital, her little kidneys shutting down.
Then Nicole’s 5-year-old brother, Aaron, fell ill, following her into the hospital [...]

What every parent should know: signs that your child has type 1 diabetes

Without fail whenever I was excessively thirsty as a child, my mom would query is I was becoming a diabetic.
Turns out she was not too far from the truth because that is one of the warning signs.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation wants every parent to be “T1D Aware” – type 1 diabetes aware. [...]

R Baby raises money to save babies’ lives. Walk with us!

Lots of mothers will tell you their lives changed forever the day their child was born. That was true for me, too, but then just nine days later, my life changed again.
That was the day my daughter died.
I didn’t expect to get pregnant. After years of being told my husband, Dan, and I could not [...]
