February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. Helping students, one school and one teacher at a time

On an early February morning at Stedman Elementary School, the pressure was high.
Two students vomited. A few cried at their desks. Another imagined goblins might get him if he failed.
It was the day the third-graders took their first Colorado Student Assessment Program exams, and the 8- and 9-year-olds were all nerves.
Students rubbed lucky “Zap CSAP” [...]

The show’s setting is a normal-seeming cityscape — until it fills with marvels, from crazy street tricks to awesome acrobatics. It’s all set to an eclectic original soundtrack of jazz, pop and more. Rockies’ Mora a five-tool player off the field with quintuplets

Melvin Mora wanted a boy. He had escaped the violence that claimed his father’s life in Venezuela to make it in the big leagues, and he had found love in his wife, Gisel, and stepdaughter, Tatiana. But he wanted a boy.
“We wanted a boy so we could have a boy and a girl,” Mora said. [...]

Pretending to be Brave

As soon as March rolls around, we’re ready for spring.  Yes, the weather is pretty mild here in the Denver area.  (Those residents who didn’t do hard time in the brutal winters of the Midwest think it’s actually cold here, but we know differently.)  Even with all the sunshine we get here in Colorado, as [...]

Kids in the City! Pajama Brunch at Second Home – Enter to WIN!

This is one heck of a clever idea for kids in the city on a Sunday morning, especially if you have early risers. The Pajama Brunch at Second Home located inside the JW Marriott Denver in Cherry Creek is a real gem of an activity for the urban child. Cherry Creek is known for its [...]

Children’s Museum All About Animals Month – Win 4 Tickets!

The Children’s Museum struts, waddles, flaps, and soars into the month of March with new theme—All About Animals.
It’s nearly impossible to find a toddler or preschooler who doesn’t appreciate furry and feathery friends. I took my two youngest children to explore some of the animal-themed activities knowing none of us would leave disappointed. One [...]

Snowmass: Inspiring Olympic Aspirations in Families + Win 4 Ski Passes!

Aspen has a couple of things working against it: exorbitant prices and a reputation for misbehaving celebrities such as Charlie Sheen and those on VH1’s controversial Secrets of Aspen.
Fortunately, it has even more going for it.
My family visited Snowmass for the first time last weekend. I was eager to try the largest of Aspen Ski [...]

Spring 2010 Children’s Consignments Sale Schedule!

Twice a year, I do a round-up detailing Colorado’s popular children’s consignment sales. This year, it wasn’t going to happen due to my crazy life and travel schedule.
That’s why I’m grateful that Tracey Gifford stepped forward to help. The proud mother of two elementary-age boys is the owner of the Just Between Friends sale in [...]

Gunfire hits 2 kids at Deer Creek Middle School in Littleton

The scene unfolded Tuesday afternoon with shocking familiarity — a shooting outside a Jefferson County school, wounded students, heroic teachers, frantic parents.
When it was over, a man with a history of mental problems was in jail, accused of opening fire with a hunting rifle; two eighth-graders were hospitalized — one in critical condition; and one [...]
