After a dip between 2006 and 2007, the rates of confirmed child abuse and neglect in the [...]

Involve kids early in family’s giving ethos

Involving your children — young or grown — in your philanthropy is one of the best ways to pass on your values about community, giving back and helping others. Kids learn not only by example but also by actively participating in their family’s giving plan.
Children as young as 3 can be encouraged to donate gently [...]

Arvada’s “Flat Stanley” takes kid fun to a cool new dimension

Since 1964, the “Flat Stanley” books have encouraged kids to see the world, well, three-dimensionally.
Flat Stanley devotees spread the gospel today by encouraging young people to send letters to strangers around the globe, with words of encouragement and a Flat Stanley likeness enclosed. When that US Airways flight miraculously landed in the Hudson River in [...]

What Our Family Learned in Highlands Bowl: Tips From A Pro and Brotherly Love

The last time I hiked Highlands Bowl, my younger son was 7. It was a horrifying experience. The skiing was sublime. The hike, well, let’s just put it this way: I waited four years to do it again.
There is something about being a mom following a beloved son up a snowy knife-edge of a [...]

Letterboxing: Finding More Than Just Hidden Treasure

What is Letterboxing? Amber wrote a post about this last year, but I thought I’d add a little update of our own.  Honestly, before Amber’s post, I’d never heard of it. I thought maybe it was a craft idea or a new exercise routine.
Well, it’s not!
Oddly enough, being “crafty” helps, and you do [...]

Arapahoe Basin: Mom and Daughter’s First Ski Lessons!

Heading to Summit County for a day of skiing, on a Saturday, with the half the Front Range can take twice as long as the average trip to the mountains. I was proud we made our 6:30 am departure time, but as soon as we hit I-70 out of Golden we realized it wasn’t early [...]
