February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. But knowing that there are around 14 million single parents out there…I’m guessing that I’m not alone in this venture.

Normal is a setting on your dryer: A dad’s cancer, a mom’s new role & the new normal

What is “normal” and why do we always seem to be looking for it? It makes sense that some would seek predictability once they start a family, but is “normalcy” really something we can attain?
“I can’t wait to have a normal life,” is exactly what I was thinking three years ago in St. Louis, when [...]

Mama Drama: Potty Training On The Go

Dear Mama Drama:
My two year old is potty training and has moved into wearing “big girl panties.” I am freaked out about taking her out of the house because I’m afraid she’ll have an accident and will become too discouraged. How can I take her out and help her to be successful?

What every parent should know: signs that your child has type 1 diabetes

Without fail whenever I was excessively thirsty as a child, my mom would query is I was becoming a diabetic.
Turns out she was not too far from the truth because that is one of the warning signs.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation wants every parent to be “T1D Aware” – type 1 diabetes aware. [...]

Taking on Brunswick Zone’s New Bowling Mamas League

I have a confession: I generally avoid activities at which I suck. I’m not sure if this is due to the fact that I hate losing or that I’m not having a good time if I’m not winning.
Oh wait. Is that the same thing?
Regardless, bowling is one such activity. So, when my friend Eva invited [...]

Mama Drama: Friendship Frustrations

Dear Mama Drama:
I have two sons who are very outgoing, but very unique. Both struggle with making lasting friendships at school and say that others seem to avoid them. They often blast in instead of joining into groups or repeat annoying behavior when they have been asked to stop. My oldest son does gross and [...]

R Baby raises money to save babies’ lives. Walk with us!

Lots of mothers will tell you their lives changed forever the day their child was born. That was true for me, too, but then just nine days later, my life changed again.
That was the day my daughter died.
I didn’t expect to get pregnant. After years of being told my husband, Dan, and I could not [...]

Next Stop: Kindergarten (and how to enjoy the ride)

Is it just me, or does anyone else hate buying back-to-school items?  I’ve tried to get a little here and there, taking my 12-page list each time I head out to Target.  We may have to look into donating our plasma (blood, not TV) this month in order to make ends meet in order to [...]

C to the Section–A mom’s general observations about c-sections

Editor’s note: Since writing this post, Gretchen gave birth to her eighth child yesterday. He weighed 7lbs 15 oz. He is currently in the NICU for rapid respiration so be sure to send Gretchen your well-wishes.
My first five kids were born via what some people deem the old-fashioned way. Then the exit sign flickered out.
The [...]
