Parent-teacher conferences: Love ‘em or hate ‘em?

Parent-teacher conference is this week at our school. My children could not be more different and I’m learning to adapt and recognize the talents each child has.
At our last conference, I learned 6-year-old Hadley’s talent is not listening and 4-year-old Bode’s does not involve his fine motor skills.
I admittedly braced myself when I met with [...]

Why I (don’t?) want kids

Don’t let the title fool you, I really do want kids. But as a  23-year-old soon-to-be college graduate the pressures to get married and have kids are making my head spin.
This may be because my experiences with kids have been quite comedic – and dreadful.
When I was 13 I started my “babysitting career.” That didn’t last [...]

Tips for affordable family fun from The Go To Gals

It was the holiday season, and Teresa Mendel’s to-do list could fill a book the size of “War and Peace.”
“I was planning a party for my husband’s company, on top of the usual chores and the extra holiday tasks,” she says. “I was delivering cupcakes to my daughter’s class when I thought, ‘I need help.’ [...]

Woodward at Copper: The Coolest Summer Camp on Earth

Our boys had a great summer in 2010. Why? Because it was the first summer that they each went to sleepover camp. Although they didn’t go to camp together, they both went to the same freestyle skiing camp: Woodward at Copper.
Woodward at Copper is a relatively new, year-round addition to the [...]

Why the sky is the limit (and slightly stinky) with Destination ImagiNation

Last weekend, my first grader Hadley competed for the first time in Jefferson County Schools Destination ImagiNation Regional Tournament at Alameda High School.
Not familiar with Destination ImagiNation (DI)? Join the club.
Actually, “club” may not be the correct word for this international organization that caterers to kindergarten through university students. The concept is simple: teach [...]

Instrument drive aimed to ‘keep music alive’

“Unplayed instruments are like a silent orchestra, there is no sound, no benefit and no joy. That orchestra can be brought to life when people make those instruments available to kids who really want to learn.” – Steve Blatt, the Director of Community Programs for Colorado Public Radio.
Through the end of March CPR is holding [...]
