February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. And let me be upfront about this: I’m no clinical expert. I’m just a single mom trying to figure life out as I go. But knowing that there are around 14 million single parents out there…I’m guessing that I’m not alone in this venture.

Fast-food restaurant playgrounds under the microscope

One of those who slithered her way through the multihued plastic tubes of a fast-food restaurant playground here one recent morning was not enjoying herself in the least.
“It’s bad,” Erin M. Carr-Jordan said, swab in hand, as she collected samples from a surface that she would later deliver to a lab for microbial testing.
Carr-Jordan, a [...]

Mama Drama: School Anxiety Support…for Mom

Dear Mama Drama:
I was bullied in school and have a lot of anxiety for my daughter who just started preschool. I worry that the teachers won’t stand up for her and that she’ll be picked on, so I’ve told her to hit anyone who bothers or hurts her.
Her teachers say that she will end [...]

SpongeBob in hot water from study of 4-year-olds

The cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants is in hot water from a study suggesting that watching just nine minutes of that program can cause short-term attention and learning problems in 4-year-olds.
The problems were seen in a study of 60 children randomly assigned to either watch “SpongeBob,” or the slower-paced PBS cartoon “Caillou” or assigned to draw [...]

The Lion King 3D in Theatres & DVD (plus ideas to throw your Family Pride Party!)

To say I like the Lion King is a bit of an understatement: It is my favorite all-time Disney movie.
Unfortunately, my only copy of the movie bit the dust years ago (along with my VCR) so my kids have never seen it. That’s why I was thrilled to learn The Lion King 3D will be [...]

Heat-related illnesses spur petition for Sept. school start in Denver

Three cases of heat-related illness during the back-to-school heat wave are being used to fuel the argument that kids shouldn’t have to be in the classroom before Labor Day.
“The bottom line for me comes down to health and safety,” said Stacy Smith, a parent of two Denver Public Schools students who is petitioning for a [...]

How to help your child make friends and fit in

An interview with Dr. Jeffrey I. Dolgan, Senior Psychologist at Children’s Hospital Colorado
Q: How can parents help their children choose good friends?
A: Parents need to find out who is in their child’s peer group. You can get a good idea about the other kids by making connections with their families. I suggest hosting something to [...]

You Live Where? Raising a Small Family in Downtown Denver

Almost exactly one year ago, my family and I relocated from New York City to Downtown Denver. While we were raised in the mountains of Colorado, we felt this would ease the transition for us as well as adhere to some of our lifestyle values. It made sense to us, but most of our [...]

Talking with Kids about 9/11: Lessons in Compassion

With the ten year anniversary of September 11th looming near, many parents may be wondering what to tell their children about that infamous day. Most of today’s school age kids were either very young children or not yet born when the attacks occurred. They likely don’t have their own memories of the day, but have [...]

Successful School Fundraisers: Cookie Dough vs Real Dough

It’s no secret that schools are hurting for cash. Parent volunteers are stepping up as best they can, and schools turn to fundraisers to help bridge the gap between the Have and the Want, or in some cases, the Need.

I do not begrudge the schools for doing fundraisers, and kudos to the [...]
