DIY Network Star Amy Matthews Talks About HomeAdvisor
It is rare that I walk into a building and have the employees whooping it up and high-fiving each other. Celebration was certainly what I felt when I walked under the balloon arch that was shaped like a house outline (how did they DO that?) into the Golden Headquarters of HomeAdvisor (formerly Service Magic) during their Launch Event. Home Advisor is the one stop online (and via app) to focus on  your home repair, maintenance, and improvement. Access to the site is free.
The center of the lobby was a photo opportunity for everyone to get their photo taken with Amy Matthews, DIY and HGTV star.
Throughout her career Amy has done (or has taught) every home improvement imaginable, from wielding a sledgehammer to overseeing a complete home build. She had some great tips about women and taking care of your home.
  1. When it comes to Home Safety, hire professionals. Safety is not something that is a DIY project.
  2. Understand the basics of your home maintenance – get your roof checked annually, if you have a fireplace get it “swept” every year.
  3. Set reminders (there is a great tool to set these on HomeAdvisor.com) for basic maintenance and seasonal updates – like getting those leaves out of the gutters.
  4. When it comes to renovations think energy savings (they pay off most). Understand your neighborhood (who’s updated what), winterize (calking and doorstops, all entry points should be checked including cable wire entrances), furnace filter.
In her opinion, women should not be intimidated by men in the industry. She said she believes that women can be better DIYers because we tend to not be out to prove anything but simply ask a lot of questions. We are curious  and constantly learning. But more than that, we know when to call in the professionals – like someone vetted through HomeAdvisor.
Amy shared with me that she is a new mom and dealing with all the same mom issues that we all do. Which I think made her more endearing to me. I am certain to share HomeAdvisor with friends.
