The Kid Blender: A Single Mom’s Attempt to Find Joy in an Unexpected Life
February 8, 2012 – 8:00 am | 3 Comments

In this series of blogs, the “Kid Blenders,” I will be addressing our challenges, trying to blend our two families together. The names of the children will be changed to spare the easily embarrassed. And let me be upfront about this: I’m no clinical expert. I’m just a single mom trying to figure life out as I go. But knowing that there are around 14 million single parents out there…I’m guessing that I’m not alone in this venture.

Division of Labor
January 15, 2008 – 12:04 am | No Comment

I’ll apologize upfront. This post is more centered on working mamas and their working spouses. But recently, I was discussing school drop-off and pick-up procedures with a friend and was shocked to discover that until recently, she accomplished both by herself. AND held down a full-time job. What changed was, her work was failing and [...]

The Fly
January 4, 2008 – 12:00 am | No Comment

There were some issues recently at my son Declan’s school with a few kids in his class saying some mean things to him. These included the ever-so-lovely, “If you won’t do this, I won’t be your friend” routine… and sometimes it got even more, well, juvenile, with downright name-calling.
The other night he was telling us [...]

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them
December 12, 2007 – 12:09 am | No Comment

It started out with a series of lies. Bald-faced lies. Lies where he thinks I am too stupid to figure them out because his perspective on the world is so narrow… that he can’t fathom there is stuff outside his realm of understanding. Therefore, if he doesn’t know it, *I* don’t know it either.
WRONG, KID. [...]

Desperately Seeking Presents That Won’t Be Recalled in 6 Months… and Some Holiday Spirit
November 27, 2007 – 12:45 am | 18 Comments

Anyone else sick of sorting through the bin and taking toys away from their children because of safety concerns? My favorite was the Aqua Dots fiasco, where the little pellets were filled with the date rape drug GHB. How does a DATE RAPE drug get into our toys? I mean, a Stoli martini maybe… but [...]

A Family Who Bags Together, Learns Together
November 21, 2007 – 12:53 am | No Comment

I completely abhor raking leaves. It comes from growing up in Maryland, where there are a LOT of leaves, and a LOT of wet, gooey leaves. In fact, when Bryan asked me to marry him, I said yes only on the condition that I would NEVER have to rake another leaf again. And Bryan had [...]

My Two Miracles
November 15, 2007 – 12:59 am | No Comment

Why did I start blogging?
Because I have a bad memory.
The truth behind the bad memory is a rough childhood with an alcoholic father and a coping mechanism that stays with me to this day.
Things have gotten better as an adult and I certainly don’t have any problems functioning in my life – but details… well, [...]

It Makes Me Feel Normal. Kinda.
November 9, 2007 – 12:18 am | No Comment

My son Declan has a very strict bedtime routine – completely of his own invention. When I tell you about it, please do not think we are nuts. (Just think of all the crazy stuff you have done for your kids.)
Every night, every bedtime goes exactly like this:
Pajamas, medicine (for allergies), brush teeth, go potty… [...]

Coming Full Circle
November 1, 2007 – 12:39 am | No Comment

My mom is going to grin ear to ear when she reads this. When I was a child, my mother had a particular way of correcting my grammar. She basically pretended she didn’t hear me and/or didn’t understand me when I spoke inappropriately.
IT DROVE ME ABSOLUTELY NUTS.
Aimee: “Me and Jenny are playing with dolls.”
Mom: “Who?”
Aimee: [...]

Technokid
October 27, 2007 – 12:50 am | No Comment

Bryan and I are tech freaks, so I am not surprised that Declan loves gadgets and gizmos already. At JUST-TURNED-FIVE.
We gave him one of our old PDA’s… and he uses it to practice his letters, do little graffiti drawings and manage the profusion of play-dates with his little friends. (Just kidding, that’s my job). OK, [...]

Finding Turtle
October 21, 2007 – 12:22 am | No Comment

My son Declan loves the movie Cars. Loves, loves, loves. And ever since we broached the subject of Halloween, he was determined to be Lightning McQueen on the spookiest night of the year.
But here’s thing, while I have nothing against Lightning McQueen as a person, err, talking car… I really hate pre-made costumes. Particularly cheap, [...]
